Although I think I already know the answer I want to double check here.

I'm looking into putting ports into a midbass cabin with a range of 80-700hz, but due to build limitations I will not be able to put them in the front. Could I have the ports (with a port tuning of 90hz) fire from the side walls, instead of the front? Or would this influence SQ too much? I can imagine this having a detrimental effect.

Perfectly alright to do so and may actually be better in regard to SQ than front or rear firing ports, for reasons of which you are probably aware.

Let's assume I don't know anything about it ;). Is it because of timing of the main vs port generated sound?

Not common in commercial speakers, probably for cosmetic reasons, but it has been done

A lot use backside ports though.
