should i isolate the woofer and midbass with a separate chamber?

hi

A question here. I am running a 3way system with 10inch woofer, 6inch midwoofer/midrange and a soft dome tweeter. Here comes the interesting part, the speaker drivers used for this enclosure were not the original ones. the original midrange has a sealed back speaker type so the cone wont get affected by the woofer backwave pressure.

however now i replaced all of the drivers and using a midrange driver currently that is opened back(see photo below) and it shares the same volume with the woofer. So the question now i been wondering should i make a separate chamber sealed for the midrange? or it wont hurt anything let both the midrange and woofer to share the same volume in the enclosure? FYI the box is a vented box not sealed box

from the photo can be seen all the drivers share the same volume ... another one shows the midrange is opened backed type

Normally one would make a separate chamber for optimal results but if you are not going to design a custom made crossover for these exact units, don't bother with the chamber.

i am using active 3 ways BTW now ... i just want to know that will it affect the woofer bass extension and the midrange sound clarity?

You certainly should include a separate, sealed enclosure for the 6" speaker to avoid interaction with the woofer

The reflex port will have to be redesigned to suit the new woofer specs and the smaller volume it will occupy within the modified enclosure.

To make it clear, the old reflex port is unlikely to correctly tune the enclosure to match your new woofer and this will affect the bass performance.

+1 , you could glue a (wooden?) bucket to the inside of the mid driver hole, which you insert via the bass woofer hole or create a little box.
Any modeling software of or maybe the manual can tell you how big that has to be, and put some stuffing (fiberglass, old pilow, etc ) in it.

that is the old photo ... recently the bass reflex port just been upgraded and also at the same time at the cost of having my right hand fingers clipped badly by those bulky and heavy enclosures

it looks physically ... but i've used it as a 2 way system before and it sounded quite good in the midrange before i bought the woofer and transform all to a 3way system

Know the model number of that 6 inch woofer?
It looks like a high excursion subwoofer and may not be suited for midrange.

ok some updates here ... if i am going to replace my midrange with this sealed back midrange, i will no longer need to build a separate chamber to isolate the midrange and the woofer?

Correct, the sealed back construction of the driver itself takes care of that for you.

ok then ... i will just replace with this unit ... but unfortunately need an adapter bracket due to it is only 5.25inch ... my current unit is 6inch

Be aware that it may not work well. Sealed back mid-range drivers often need to be crossed quite high. I have tried to use a couple and thought they sounded very distorted crossed low. What else is available locally in 6"? A mid-range compartment isn't that hard to retrofit with a few simple tools. In fact I have used Milo tins: suitably modified of course.

You need to make the mid enclosure `not too small` But yes get that mf out of the way of the bass pressure waves

BTW maybe i will create a chamber using MDF discs stacked together just to have enough back volume for it forming a bucket shape ... i just came across this idea yesterday when back from work after visiting a local car accessories store they have woofers in bullet enclosures ... MDF cylinders ...
