Re: I Can Watch TV During the Day!

Well, i just recived my ohp, $119 shipped. I asked them to send me one without a lamp in it so i could have the ohp cheap, well, they sent me one with a lamp. I fired it up and the thing is bright! As i write this im watching my setup with a z115 (with the windows open during the day) and it is damn nice looking. I sure cannot wait to see the thing with a new lamp in it! It will be crazy bright! I do have one slight problem however, during dark scenes i can see one little hot spot on the screen  . I made sure the fresnel was on the right side as it had poped out during shipping, i tried mess with the condenser but had no luck. Also, i know it is not my projection panel doing it. The only thing i can think of is that the bulb is somehow installed wrong. When i put the ohp on low power it looks better, but can still be seen. I'm kind of puzzled wbout this.

Congrats! i think you got an lamp still in its working condition.
The reason they kept bulb inside is because the bulb is very hard to remove 😀 I just replaced mine. It took me a good half hour. Most of time I was trying to fit my wrench into the tiny space around the lamp housing, and trying to hold the bulb without breaking it. The new bulb has thumb screws, so next time it will be easier.

Anyway, I got the same bright dot in the center of the screen along with a bright ring about 3/4 size of the screen. it is kind of annoying. The whole thing is much brighter than the 3m 9550 I have. for example, i can see the image with all the light on (not clear though), while 3m 9550 gave me almost no image at all in the same light condition.

here is a image of the new bulb i put in. Notice it has a smaller arc and thumb screws:

yea, i noticed that the bulb was stuffed in there pretty well. I'm only getting the little hot spot, no rings. Make sure your fresenel lens has the right side pointed to the bulb end (there is a little sticker that says where to put it). The fresnel in my unit poped out during shipping and I had it in wrong (the image was all messed up). Im not sure what to do about the hot spot. I tried rasing the lcd 1-2 inches higher and it was no help. Im thinking i will change the condensor lens and see what happens. Any thoughts on this?

[EDIT] I take it you have the bulbs in? When can i pay you?

Well, three of us tryed it,( the 3 I know ) Proto5 ( the first to do it ), cruser, and me.

And the we all have the same conclusion, no more hot spot.

My bottom fresnel is at it's origin position, and the top fresnel is ¾" over the lcd, so about 1½" from the bottom fresnel, and I still can focus without any trouble.

Bulbs have not arrived yet. that one is one of two bulbs I bought at April.

I think the hot spot has to do with the fresnel. I don't want to split it yet. I will swap it with the one in my 9550 see if it helps.

I was thinking the same thing... then i though naw forget it, yo home to bel-air! Hmm, actually that is good suggestion, i may just give it a try. I'm still a slit fresnel sceptic though.

verbose come on d00d believe me the split fresnel is way better
than the glued didnt you see my post what more do you want i will never use the glued fresnel again EVER!!

About the Elmo HPA305SD

Hey guys..

I have a question for those with Elmo HP-A305 SDs.. what kind of optics are inside? reflector? condenser? etc. Can anyone take a picture of the inside of one of these? I'm interested as to whether its possible to retrofit one of these with a HQI set up.

Thanks in advance,

It would be retrofittable, and does have a very nice projection lens, but retrofitting it would be pointless! You will probably spend a good $200 on the ohp, and then drop another $200 to retrofit, plus $200 for an xga lcd, then your up to $600. This is already a great ohp becuase it is hmi metal halide. You would really not gain much by retrofitting.

On the other hand though, if you were to pick up an apollo ai-1000 ohp, and retrofit it, that would a cheaper solution. I would sugest though that you retrofit a triplet lens into it. http://members.cox.net/rolm/update is a good guide.

Well..

Well.. actually I picked a broken one up for $20 and I'm just waiting for it to arrive. The idea of the expensive replacement lenses for the Elmo really turned me off.. so I'm just sitting here hoping that the optics haven't been stripped out 😕.

Does the 305s have a reflector? From reading other posts I know it has a condenser. I was thinking of trying something along the lines of what rolm did, I was just waiting for the OHD to arrive so I could take a look inside (first thing I've picked up in my DIYproj quest).

Im just about to pick up a Benq FP567s.. although kinda pricey.. for $370 canadian.. but no tax. 400:1 and 16ms (supposedly) sounds pretty good 🙂

:headbash:

Sigh, I woke up, checked the tracking on the Elmo.. and it says.. Resched. Delivery!! Gah.. I must have slept through the delivery! But when I click on details it still says "out for delivery" so I have my fingers crossed.. Doesn't make a huge difference since I don't have the other parts I need.. but stilllllll..

nope 🙂. An update though. While watching tv for hours on end, i noticed my projection panel was becoming very [alarmingly] warm (even with the fan). As it turns out, the heat was being caused by the unpolarized light at the LCD. Go figure. So, i threw a piece of 3m dual brightness film onto the stage of the ohp (for yux), and then placed my projection panel on top. To my amassment, the entire projection panel was running damn cool (like not even warm). After watching a 2 1/2 hour movie, the LCD was cool so I removed the projection panel to see what the film was now like... the stage was bloody hot (enough that it hurt to touch). That 3m film is good stuff! And there was very little light loss at all. Another great deed it did was fix the hot spot. Now I can hardly notice it. So IMHO, all the polarization mumbo jumbo is really worth it.
