Hello everyone!
I have a 3m 9550 OHP and a Proxima Ovation 822C (or one of the 820 models) and I have been pretty happy with the results; except for the contrast and the low resolution (640 x 480).
So I've been thinking about buying a 1024 x 768 LCD from eBay and stripping it down. Then taking apart my OHP and using the parts to build my own projector. Is this a good idea? Or would I be better off just placing the stripped LCD over the OHP (the same way I've been using my Proxima ovation)?
Also, another question: if I end up never getting an LCD to strip, how could I improve the contrast of my current setup?

I'm a complete noob, but I'm pretty sure if you get a brighter light source the contrast will look better. I have an old OHP and a Telex Magnabyte m2x. The OHP is only 2000 lumens so its kinda weak. I gutted that old OHP today and when my 400w ballast comes in a week I'm gonna mount that puppy inside of there. It will really improve everything as it will be over twice as bright as it was before. So maybe you can look into getting a brighter light source, but im not totally sure I am new.
right now I have a cardboard light pyramid on there which seemed to help reduce the lighting in the room from the OHP. My OHP is a 4,000 lumen! Tom's Hardware is using a stripped LCD and a 3,500 lumen projector with beautiful results. I'm starting to lean toward that objective.
Hmm. Well you certainly have your lighting in check. What are you using as a screen? Maybe you could upgrade that.
my screen is just some smooth white fabric I bought for really cheap. Maybe I should get a nicer screen.
I have OHP and 820 LCD panel.
After I got 15" LCD panel I realised that OHP is too small.
OHP is 10" wide and LCD is 12" wide.
That might be fine for widescreen movies but you can use windows
like that. 4:3 movies have corners further cut because OHP "window"
has rounded corners.
Picture was much better and it was great improvement.
Another issue is the size, your projected image will be much bigger
as panel diagonal is some 8".
My plan is to build another projector and I have lenses on the way.
You might be able to cut OHP to expose more of the fresnels if they
are bigger than openning. In my case they are but still not big enough
to cover whole LCD monitor.
Cheers!
