I did a forum search, and pulled up tons of stuff on individual component prices. Seeing as how I don't yet have a good grasp of all the parts involved in a typical GC or IGC design, it's a bit difficult to piece together what the whole shebang woud run per channel (ballpark, of course).
So, without narrowing it down to a more specific design, could someone toss out a rough $$ figure for a single 50W channel, individual transformer, IGC design, 3875 chip - without any housing costs?

hmmmmm, that price doesn't even include a PCB
what amazes me is that someone will pay E30 for a torroid transformer ($32), yet you can purchase an entire high quality linear supply (Lambda, Kepco, Acopian) for a fraction of the cost. Because of the telecom equipment glut there are high power/relatively high voltage supplies going for a small fraction of their OEM cost. You just have to look.
yeah, for the same VA rating the transformer will be larger, but figure this, you don't need all the regulatory apparatus in the power supply and (despite your readily acknowledged metal working wizardry) the average (i.e. less skilled) DIY'r has the benefit of an industrial grade casing (and, for the purposes of accomodating the aesthetic concerns of the wife and promoting domestic tranquility) it can always be dressed up with a nicely stained birch ply veneer.Peter Daniel said:But wouldn't that make a GC much bigger?
Well, I am getting in a few 300 watt Sorensens this week.
I can't help it, I also drive a 16 year old MB. Bought it cheap and it has incredible quality compared to the US produced rust-buckets. Must be the cheap gene somewhere in my DNA helix.
