oooh!!

Maxiran plus HP85(?) and plotter.

I repaired the ribbon to the printer on one of those, soldering in 20ft seas.

Where is the photo from ? I see a folder with Decca Survey logo ?

Not sure where it was. Maybe in Spain, doing some geophysics in the Gaviota gas field. But not sure in what vessel, I see an american flag in one of the work suits.

Until recently I had a lot of technical documentation of many positioning equipment: Hifix, Pulse/8, Maxiran, Trisponder, Aquafix, etc.. and a couple of boxes with prints from airgun arrays, side-scan sonars, etc... but they got lost in a moving 🙁

I remember I had also a (defective) SatNav unit (a briefcase) but someone bought it for a penny ...

I was 16-18 years old by that time. I was studying electronics and got hired by Racal-Decca for weekend job (office helping hand, photocopies, binding offers and brochures, etc). They had some HP-97 calculators and I use them to make small programs. I made one to convert geographic coordinates to UTM (ED50). They got impressed and let me join the field team on holidays.

It was quite interesting for me, and learnt a lot about geophysics, navigation and positioning. Unfortunately I got to join the military service (obligatory in Spain those days) and when I returned it was GPS everywhere and the survey bussines was quite down.

They had a survey vessel in service, the Decca Engineer and a new and modern one was set afloat (Lady Hamilton was it's name, but I never was aboard). I was in the Decca Engineer for a couple of seismic campaings. I was in Norway (Ekofisk and Gullfaks) and in the Gaviota oil field in north spain. Also I was in a seismic campaing for the Gibraltar strait tunnelling project (something that probably will never be done)

I used a lot of unusual equipment, side-scan sonars, air gun arrays, magnetometers, echo sounders, etc.. and also a wide range of navigation aids and positioning systems. I was even in a Pulse/8 station for a week. ohh.. sweet memories.
