Hi my “Sherwood RD-6108 A/V Receiver” used to hook up with my old tube TV and a composite cable (red, yellow, white). It worked great, remote and all. Recently I bought a Sony Google TV, which has only 4 HDMI and 1 optical out put and 2 USB ports.
My receiver doesn’t have an HDMI input jack, but it has an optical jack. When I hooked up an optical cable tv to the receiver, it didn't work.
After I put one end of the cable to the TV, I checked the other end of the cable. Then I saw the red light glowing from the end. There was also a red light glowing inside the TV optical jack, but there was no light glowing inside the A/V receiver optical jack. I don't know if my receiver's optical jack is bad or something else. Please help me.

Only in the SOURCE end of the cable will be light. Not in the receiver side, that is the... RECEIVING side of that light signal.
Most likely is a setting that is wrong in your new toy. Somewhere on the "Digital Audio" side...
