Sheet Materials are not created equally ( UK perspective on Birch Ply and MDF ).

For me, some things with MDF are pretty good, like being fairly flat to start with and the edges are easy to work. Then OTOH, it is hard on all saw blades, router bits and sometimes sanding paper. this stuff is far from pure. It can take a finish pretty well too where as wood sometimes can actually react to a finish and cause more time with multiple coats of finish needed. Overall, I have always preferred wood, solid wood that is. You are fortunate to find a decent multiple plywood w/o voids and doesn't splinter on the edge as it is worked.
