How about alittle searching! (sorry I thought I'd never hear about something as old as a qa-50) Its not suitable, as far as I remember is black and white, possibly only 2 colors, and I think its not even 640x480, but 640x400.
Look for a sharp qa-1050 or higher.
Forget the ebay scam. A tv and lens really does work though. But not a fresnel 6x ********. I used to use a 13" tv and a 175mm diameter (huge!) triplet lens, watchable at around 60-80 inches. Excellent focus, ok brightness.
www.diyprojectiontv.com is a great site for making a projector with a TV. Results can be quite great!
As for an LCD projector. I think it would be best for starters for you to find a bright overhead projector and a halfdecent projection panel (640x480, 15bit color and up). See how you like it. Than move on to a home build, 7" or 15" monitor, with proper optics and metal hallide light source.
Cheers,
Alex
