can one get some or any semblance of what a speaker sounds like from recording it and playing that recording back - say on headphones? Here's FE206EN in a 1954 design "Karlsonette" - I'm not sure how much of the impression stayed in the recording. Its interesting to see on Audacity the differences in left and right dB for recording just one cabinet. My Zoom H2 was at about standing ear height and maybe 12 foot back. the only way that I could consider this would be to set up a "reference room", using exactly the same speaker locations and equipment, including microphone(s), and recording media. It could be instructive. It may give at least an impression of some of the differences. But it may not. Great music on the YouTube video by the way (Ry Cooder? sounds like something he might have been involved with...)

Using an artificial head could possibly give an impression.

One can hear that the Fostex in the Karlson cabinet gives good bass. Does it really have the right parameters for the Karlson?
going by ear I'd say they're "right enough" - its a bit "warm" yet bass drum has excellent overtone structure, vocals in general sound better than my BK20 w. 1772.
here's a brief snippet of BK20 BLH with W8-1772 followed by the old Karlson 12 with FE206EN (stock new 206) - there's no change on the amp/TVC setting - there's a slight difference in position as the cabinets were side by side against one of my Klipschorns. The fixed picture on the video is 1772/BK20 wav followed by K12/ FE206EN wav (I probably could have placed the mic better)

The differences are surprisingly apparent considering the limitations. I'm listening on my old pair of Senn HD600 plugged straight into an EMU 0404. The second track sounds pretty close to a live recording of the band, while the first sounds more compressed and conventionally hifi. I wonder though how much is due to the different drivers vs the enclosures.
I think some of its from the Karlson as my early 8K is loaded with a 1772 and has a lively sound (60's model 8K currently has Panasonic "metal" = good sound too but less top octave energy than 1772) - if I can get into a mood to be made ill & miserable from Karlsonette's loose shredding rockwool, I'll swap speakers and do comparisons - maybe:
(1) record 1772/BK20 (2) record Karlsonette/FE206E - (3) swap 1772 into Karlsonette and record whatever reference track at same level, etc. (4) load 206EN into BK20 to get another baseline - - -what I really need to do is to make a custom short and concise test track with:vocals, violin, drums, etc. - For just a track or two of music what would you pick? My recording method has one extra analog step as H2 isn't recognized via USB and its output is fed out the headphone jack into a soundcard - might need firmware update

hey Greg B - here's a composite track played: (1) Karlsonette/FE206EN (2)Tangband W8-1772/BK20 BLH (3) Karlson 8/ W8-1772. The 17.25" tall Karlson sitting on the floor is at a disadvantage for the mic height. The sax which is spectacular on K15 with good coaxial isn't quite as good on these single-drivers - I suspect power response vs off axis can be better on the coaxials using decent compression drivers.
