Sharing all my digital work - will downloaders pay to maintain diyaudio?

just spent a few mins looking at some stuff.. i noticed that just in Solid State and tubes there's a bout 70 pages of threads that havnt been posted on since 1-1-2003. When you think about how many threads that is and how many replies there are to each thread, that a LOT of pages.. if we did have to pass the hat around, it would probablly be alot cheaper if old threads (say.. ones that havnt been replied to since the first of 2003) were deleted, plus its fairly hard to find what you want if you're searching. Just a thought..or we could have them automatically bumped off after a year or somthin

I'll have the donations page up and running in a couple of days... I'll make an announcement when it's up. Keep an eye out.

I wouldn't mind to pay a small yearly registration fee on this site. It's well worth it. I have good experience playing chess at http://www.chessclub.com and this type of system works very well. There you can have a guest status free, but you'll be locked out of more serious bits unless you pay about $25 a year.

lets say a donation page is made and not enough people donate and a fee is required.. lesse.. there's over 8,000 members.. i'm not sure how many are regular posters.. someone mentioned 2000.. if that was trhe case, what would the estimated cost be for membership?

Fee based will also discourage members from countries where people don't have any free cash to speak of. Of course they are spending some on DIY, but still 😉

From the thread that discusses this, it sounds like the costs are a few hundred a month. There should be a hierarchy of membership so people are listed according to their donations.
i.e. Sustaining membership, etc.
I doubt that this would alienate those that can't pay much and will encourage the heavy users with good jobs to pay accordingly.
But no obligatory payment. Pay Pal of course

Schematics for my EIAJ to I2S converter. I have been struggling for a few days to take the output from Protel and add as a picture here. Pdf formats are not accpeted. Cut and paste of pdf into paint as saving as BMP gives me bad resolution and hence, I just zip up the pdf file and post it here. I learnt about computers during the punch cards era if you are wondering why I am struggling with a simple thing like getting a picture file. It was fun, especialy if you drop the pile of cards and then need to fiure out how to put it back together again.

Anyway, I have learnt Protel ( rudimentary ) enough to get the schematics in and to autoroute PCB, not not enough to make it pretty. hence the sloppy drawing. BTW, Protel caused me to pull out whatever hair I have got left.

Schematics on line for free.

I currently have a site for free schematics with over 2 GB posted. I get the space for free in exchange for the hosting company posting a small ad on my home page. If anyone wants to have their schematics hosted somewhere, contact me at dmfraser@sbcglobal.net. The URL is www.schematicsforfree.com.

At this time, the site is totally free and will be so until the hosting company gets tired of 100GB+ a month of traffic. There are no pop-ups and no cost to the downloader. See my statement on the home page for the reasons I do this.

I've only just joined but would not have done so if I'd have to pay. Better to give a couple of weeks of free trial and then have a fee - there are just too many sites out there to try and many are crap.

I would probably subscribe to this one now that I am deriving benefit.

Google ads are making somebody I know a more than reasonable amount of pocket money and his site is no more attractive than this one.

I had a look at the set up and the ads are unobtrusive and relevant to the page they appear on. So here, for instance, we would see ads for hi-fi and electronic components.

It's seems easy to set up and once done you just sit back and watch the money come in. Of course, it would be advantageous to get as many visitors to click on an ad as possible but I would rather do that than pay a fee.

Here's my first trial for a PCB. My local shop sell only 1 copper layer PCB so I had to build one myself.

I used PCBexpress and I will use someone's tip somewhere on the forum to print it(By changing colors and removing holes and corners and grid in the options). There currently is no ground plane on the layout, and there are jumpers everywhere. also, I2S signals don't have the same distance between them. I don't know if it will cause out of sync clock signals.

Posting Schematics

If any members have original work they would like to share, please send it to me in some form I can convert into a pdf. A Word document with graphics in it or whatever is fine. I will then make a pdf of it and post it on my free schematics site:

www.schematicsforfree.mattsoft.net

Please note this is a totally free site and I get not one cent for maintaining it. All money from the few (non-pop up) ads goes to the hosting company to pay for bandwidth.

If you are not sure material may be suitable, send it anyway and I will check it out. Basically I will post anything except material where someone is trying to make a living selling it. That is, I won't publish Sams manuals or the schematics of commercially sold kits unless the seller has gone out of business. Also, please do not send stuff that is readily available elsewhere on the net, needing no more than a google search to find it.

Thanks

Dan

PDFs

As long as the pdf is not insanely big, like over 100K per page, then sending a pdf is fine. I like to use a resolution of about 300dpi when I create a pdf as a good compromise between file size and printability. And if the line graphics are no more than 16 color is good. Grey scale and full color should be reserved for photographs. Grey scale in a schematic is a waste of file space.

Have you had a look at my site? What do you think?
