seperate DAC or modifying cd player?

I'm thinking about modifying my 12 yrs old Marantz cd80 rather than buying a new player. (People keep saying I shouldn't sell this one, because nowadays players sound different, not better!)
I still like the sound, but would love (even little) more detailed and more vivid sound.
What's a better option > seperate DAC or modifying?
What can be modified? And where > in The Netherlands please. Cost indication?
I use Accuphase 205 Amp and Dynaudio 1.3 SE speakers

Jurriaan,

Within a current player, modifications are limitted within space and technical concept.

An external DAC can give more freedom of choices, and my experience is that it can bring you to an even higher level.

Using the Marantz as a drive, I'd upgrade the digital part, especially the clock and the digital output.

I designed a DAC with some friends, years ago. It may give inspiration.

If you don't have to room to modify a CDP, a DAC needs to have a good reclocker to get rid of the jitter problems in the S/PDIF chain. I think that I know some guy who sells them.........wonder who.....? [joke]

But since you have a CD-80, you have the best platform around, and lots of room.

I tried this guy's reclocker and it works really well in my separate DAC, big improvement.

Say, I would be using a DAC inside a player with I2S interface. Would I see similar improvements with reclocker or it doesn't make much difference in that case?

Peter, in that case it makes sense to do synchronous reclocking with a 74(v)hc74 for example, since you should have a low jitter clock available already (being the master clock of your pro drive)

My experience with synchronous reclocking of the TDA1543 bitclock (BCK) is very positive.

I'm currently doing comparison test between a Tent XO2 clock and Kwak-clock-7. Watch this forum the coming week.
