Heres my crazy plan to make some money. As we all know, 100" bigscreen TV plans are still selling like hotcakes on ebay, and have been since last summer. The average price of a working, decent resolution LCD or DLP projector on ebay is aroung $500-$600. So my thinking is why not sell premade "assemble your self" diy projector kits. The kits would have everything you need to build the projecter down to the slabs of wood that are precut to assemble the box. The cost for one of these if we do it right would probably be around $300-$400. And the reality is, that with a nice xga panel, it would look better than any older lcd projector.
Kit would include metal halide setups, lcd panel, projection lens, etc; every thing needed, and it would all fit snugly into the precut box.
Sounds crazy? There is a good market for it (And you would not belive what I have sold on ebay in the past)! And it is also a fun project. I kit like this would be perfect for newbies who have no clue what to do. It would come with a nice manual to boot.
What do you guys think of this idea? Any one willing to provide some help?

That would sell for sure, no doubt in my mind
Just make sure you have a really good projector plan in place.
I have also sold crazy stuff on ebay
I stuffed a bunch of pictures of Vin Diesel on a CD, made a snazzy CD cover for it, and I've made about $1000 from selling those 🙂
Its all about selling stuff that you can reproduce over and over again at a very low cost
You could probably do it for cheaper than $300 - $400 b/c don't forget you would be buying the parts in bulk

I would be interested. I would like to build my own, but am too busy with amplifier and speaker construction to learn all about video. So that would suit me.
My first stab at DIY video was a small tv in a box with a freznel lens in front of it, and it didn't work very well although if I made the inside of the box less shiny it might.
So yeah, I'd be interested.

I was thinking of doing that same thing but for speakers
That might sell aswell, but projectors would sell better I think
Actually, what might be cool is sell the diy projector and the diy audio kits together, and market it as a "Complete DIY Home Theature" package

Keep in mind that you would have to have enough cash on hand to cover the cost of the customer receiving a dead kit. Shipping disasters do happen oftern enough. Also so of the parts are very fragile (ie. the small flex cables) and it would be almost impossible to pin such minor damage like this on a shipping company. Therefore if you want to keep your customers, you would have to cover the cost yourself.
Well, after stripping lcds, mounting them on plexi is almost full proof becuse the flex cables never move. I am also ver experienced when it comes to packing boxes as i have done it for a few years now. You do bring up a good point though. Keeping cash on hand is a real good idea. I figure $50 profit on each kit that will go right into my ing bank account. Heh, my marketing and entrepreneurship class is all comming back to me now 🙂. Well, to date I have never lost money on one of my little "ebay ventures" if you will, I have enough money to make a first prototype kit to sell on ebay and make a manual with pictures, plus i have a credit card 🙂.
Oh yeah! Count me in.
I'm a major newbie to this whole thing and I have been doing nothing but reading to figure it all out. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm gathering info before I start.
If I can buy a kit with everything, and just put it together, I would buy it in a minute. At least I would have something to use and at the same time, learn how to do this.
VM, just tell me when it's ready and I'll be your first customer.
Great idea!

WTF!!! whoa your a pro...your my new hero!

if we all put our heads togeter we can be RICH! nevermind tryin to make money for yourself only, becuase we will sooner or later find your method and steal it anyways...
my 1cent(im cheap lol)
It seems like agood Idea But In reality I would think it wouldnt sell well, many reasons, a commercial projector is always going to be percieved as better, Its smaller, and its all done, Most people On ebay I dont think are willing to spend that kind of money for something they yet still have to make, a good lcd monitor costs 200 ish and wood and lighting mabe around 250.00 reflector, fresnels, fans etc mabe another 75-100.00 thats 500.00 area, and you still have to build it( the buyer) so unless you could sell it for 600 or so I dont see how it would be worth it really. I mean 50.00 profit isnt much( to me anyways) just my thoughts.
300.00 for the sharp qa 1200 thats preaty steep, ovation 822c's go for 200 now, Though some retard bought silverdokings sharp qa1050 for 200 bucks LOL thats sad, wonder if the buyer has paid for it.

I agree with you completly its MORE than stepp , after i saw the idiot who bought sivler's panel ..then i got motivated! lol i love america! ehehe free to be stupid! lol
also about the 50$ profit thing, its not worth it for YOU or maybe me, but its a reasonable profit...kinda.. it depends how you look at it, if Vm works HARD to make it, the profit should be higher, if its easy to make then the profit is good, and if i know VM im sure he will make a great profit of shipping....so the complete profit MAY be 100++ .....lol
Video freak. I've been selling on ebay for a few years now. It's all about marketing. The ad i will make for this thing will be pages long and explain all the benifits and fun of making a porjector, as well as the results. Once done reading my ad, even the blind will want my projector kit 😀. As for the parts cost, It will not be $500. I will buy in bulk and also recive discounts. Plus, using projection panels to make these things is just stupid 🙂. I would go for lcd monitors that i can buy cheap (possibly extend the cables).
Another cheaper way of making a kit would be to make the box, and size it to take any type of projection panel. So you get the box premade with all the lighting, lenses etc, and just have to buy any flavor of projection panel you want 🙂 and plop it in. It would look muhc nice thatn an ohp, and be more compact.
ok, exactly how would this thing be designed? Are you going to build this like a DIY OHP with a lcd screen? If so I don't think it will sell as good as the type of diy projector with everything in line.
One other thing, if you are going to do this you need to design your product so that it works better then what you can buy for for $900 at the store. You either need to make it brighter or have a much higher resolution.
