Just had a thought..is it possible to add compression to 'parts' of the FR during recording/mixing? Highly compressed recording has the effect of better detail in certain parts of the spectrum, namely bass. TIA

Yes, as mentioned a multiband compressor with the bands set accordingly. They are also fairly transparent provided they arent squashing too much. If the source material is a bit ropey then for system protection a limiter to safeguard after the MBComp is probably not a bad idea either.

A MB comp could fairly easily have the bands tweaked to better cover certain elements that may push too much (kick and bass combining, perhaps a hard snare, or overly loud vocal which is not adequately compressed). There is only so much you can do if the mixdown of the source material isnt great though.

Another option to consider is dynamic EQ which will offer more control but will be much harder to set up and is more source specific, probably better suited to individual tracks e.g. during the mastering stage, rather than live performances of many tracks.
