Selecting projector size help needed

Hi all,

I am Paul , i live in Delhi, India...As a newbie going thru the various posts and seeing the vivid images that folks here have created I fell lock stock and barrel for the Projector bug . A word of thanks to Hillbilly here for encouraging me on this way (helping spread the bug basically),he is a great guy.

Initially i had planned on making one of those lillies since my room is not big and i jumped head on acquiring whatever i could in the local markets (first mistake) i could get the following items

250 w bulb + ballast(non - electronic) - around 2500 rupees
Fresnel lens( from a ohp dealer) - 11" x 11" - 700 rupees
triplet lens(from ohp dealer) - 550 rupees

This was done based on some initial scouting in the market regarding the availability of car lcd monitors...being blissfully ignorant of things like resolutions, connector types, FFC issues etc. Later on with a little more education( from Hillbilly hehe ) i find now that most of the monitors available are of 800x600 dots only, i coulf find only one which had 336960 dots but it costs around 10,000 rupees(around 250 usd) so i naturally i turned to ebay.

I find that they sell lilliputs with similar res for around 100 usd but it has only RCA input, the one with VGA inputs cost around twice as much, the s&h would be around 50 usd and then the best of all there is a customs duty of 35% to be paid. The comes out to be around 14,000 rupees(318 usd)!!! - way too expensive for me.

BTW 15" lcd tft vga monitors are available here for around 11,000 rupees(250 usd)

so now i hope you can understand my predicament, i can't decide which way to go, would appreciate any help on the following points:

[typically i am aiming for a throw distance of 8' - 10', and an image size of 6' diagonal, if its somewhat smaller thats ok too.]

a) Are these RCA input lillies any good at all for projectors, typically i would be fine playing the DVD player and TV. I am not much of a gamer.

b) If i go for a 15" monitor will the optics that i already have be of any use, i am just hoping that i can exchange the 11" x 11" fresnels for 12" x 12" ones - this is the max size available, although that would cost me almost double the price.

c) what kind of precondenser lens and reflectors would be required to make the 250w lamps effective for the 15" lcd, although i haven't been able to find any reflectors as such there are concave mirrors available.

Thanks for the patience of reading such a long mail.

kind regards

welcome to the obsessive compulsive family. hopefully you have a prescription for prozac AND zoloft.

my thoughts:

firstly, be patient. speeding through the project will only cause you problems later on. read everything you can.

that being said, I'd go for the 5"lcd model. A 15" projector may need a bit more light, 250watts MAY be insufficient. You may have to spend a lot of time searching for the 5"LCD. They usually go for $40 here in the US, but you may be able to find one at a toy store, electronics store, etc. The PSOne or GameCube LCD may be a good idea. Aren't there massive outdoor markets in Dehli where you can buy cheap/import/knockoff electronics?

if you are just going to be watching movies and tv, all you really need is a composite or simple video-in plug. sound can be split off to a boombox or home stereo. start simple.

The 5inch would give you a good introduction, plus it's small enough footprint and screen size would be 40-70inches.

Hi Jaycat,

Thanks for your suggestions...well i suppose finding 5" lcd maynot be too difficult i think i have seen those for car monitors for around 90 usd or so , resolution being 800 x 600 .....

Unfortunately in Delhi there ain't no market for getting cheap imported electronics although there is one for indigenously made ones.. i think there is one in Madras though.

Thanks
paul

check resolutions

I would look carefully at the resolutions that are being offered, a lot of them are very misleading, confusing and even outright dishonest.

How about you go real cheap first: If you can find a cheap low resolution LCD and start with that at least you can get some hands on experience before you spend a lot of money. Check office or stationary or maybe bookstores for cheap fresnels. As a light source an old slide projector or something like that should be cheap. These are just suggestions for a cheap 'learning experience' projector, if you keep looking through this and other forums you will find plenty of information and experience.

Thanks...problem is i have already invested in the fresnels and the light source so cheap anyway its not going to be , i happened to see that allinbox site there they have quite a few PJ's of 15" lcd powered with 250 watt lamp source so i suppose its possible....also i don't want to go on a spiral of investments i.e buying a small lcd experimenting then buying another etc so my take is to take a proven idea , simple enough to be implemented which can use the stuff i have already bought and do it. To that end i am thinking of using the straight set models without any mirrors etc which may cause loosing brightness etc.. And anyway since i don't intend to project it beyond 8' max in any case i suppose i can live with the 250w HQI.

Can some one tell me whether 12"x12" fresnels work ok with 15" monitor, although on paper it works fine since with an aspect ration of 4:3 the dimensions of the tft should work out to be 12" x 9"

Hi Birbal,

No man , not much luck on that front, the car lcd's being sold are all of quite low resolution and hence not really suitable for DIY PJ, the one with xga resolutions sell for around 10k, so i have decided to get a proper 15" tft lcd pc monitor , these are available from 12k upwards., the size of the projector would be large but what to do..u can get good ones from ebay but then these are priced at 200 usd + around 50 usd shipping + 35% customs duty so i decided not to go for these..

so what else have u been able to source,,, i could not get them reflectors and IR / UV screens out here in Delhi.

Thanks

LCD panels in India

Nothing yet...

I plan to go the OHP way (atleast to begin with that is). I did some browsing at the local market for LCd screens and checked out LCD displays meant for in-car use (dashboard, roof top, etc) I came across one that claimed to have a resolution of 800x600 (no coour depth was indicated though) It was an assembled unit from Malaysia with a "Sony" brand sticker on it. Goes for 6K

I am a bit apprehensive about spending that much money on something that I may damage permanently during disassembly... Any idea, how hard it really is to dismantle one of those screens ?

better, lets discuss this over chat... do you have a yahoo/msn chat id ? mine is "ebirbal at yahoo dot com" for yahoo and "ebirbal at indiatimes dot com" for msn

the ones that can be usefully disassembled are the liliiput brand, these are not available out here so you have to order them from ebay, the rates i had quoted in my earlier post was of the same with xga configuration...

but with an ohp i suppose u would need a bigger screen 15" diag.

i will add your id to my msn..mine is soumendrapaul@hotmail.com

There has been alot of people that have took apart a Lilliput with success, but there is also quite a few that have broke them by taking them apart. I think if you were to go with a 7" Lcd you should go with the Innovatek. I haven't heard of anyone that has broke one of these by taking them apart. They are also cheeper and have more RCA's. The Innovatek has the same resolution as the Lilliput because they use the same LCD monitor, the Hitachi.

Atleast this is my opinion, I'm sure others would have a different opiion.
