Hello everyone,
I'm a long time DIYer having built several loudspeaker systems. I'm even experienced a bit with full rangers. I know there are a lot of great, excellent full range drivers out there. But, with the economy the way it is, I'm not overflowing with cash or credit these days.
Looking for something to go along with my little S5 Electronics 8 watt tube amp that I built. Second one down. http://s5electronics.com/gcust.html
Efficiency is desired.
I was shopping over on eBay and I bought a pair of new old stock 8 inch dual cone, full range, public address type of speakers. You know the type they usually mount in ceilings and elevators. Has anyone ever played with something like that before? The pair I purchased are American made, look very good all nice and neat etc.
Please don't be too critical of me, they only cost me $15 for the pair.
Anyway, I hooked them up unbaffled for a quick listen. I was rather pleasantly surprised at the quality of the treble, especially for a whizzer cone. I received a spec sheet from the manufacturer. MTX/Oaktron. They list them as 55Hz - 14KHz and a midband sensitivity of 94dB. Maybe I should varnish the paper cones? Danmar.
Thanks

Oaktron? Does that mean they have square magnets? Just curious, I used to fool around with Oaktron stuff years ago.
WRT your speakers, we will need some info on them before anyone can suggest a box or filter. See what you can dig up. Thiel/Small parameters are a big help. Frequency and impedance graphs help also.

It's almost definitely these: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-8-PAIR-OF-NEW-FULL-RANGE-DUAL-CONE-SPEAKERS-usa_W0QQitemZ370200562971
Easiest simple solution will likely end up being putting those full rangers on an OB with a suitable woofer of your choice (sealed or OB), and perhaps a tweeter covering the top octave if you want, probably crossed somewhere around 10-15 KHz. Simple 1st order all around, of course. It's just a question of what and where to put them and refining things, which wouldn't be difficult to do after obtaining a few measurements. I'm actually a bit curious about these cheapies myself.. seen them selling on ebay for what seems like ages now. Looks like they'll be running out soon, maybe for good. I might snag a pair, just for the heck of it.
edit: Oh yeah, I'm in the full range forum. I seem to have forgotten about that for a moment. Sorry about that. 🙂
