It's rarely mentioned that, if possible, a joint should ideally be mechanically sound before soldering.
It looks like iron tip is a bit tainted. The tip should be shiny.
When the solder touched the tip it should have melted immediately and it didn't.
The joint did go right eventually but after some fiddling about.

That seems to have been given up on years ago. I've never seen anyone else bother with it
other than myself (at least when it's possible to do, like chassis mount tube sockets).

When I did my City and Guilds electronics course in 1980 we were taught to wrap a wire 180 degrees around a post before soldering it.
That way its not relying 100% on strength of solder.
