Second Hand Turntable

If I am looking for a turntable that would be a good candidate for doing some mods to, what should I be looking for?

Belt Drive?

Brands? Thorens?

Model #'s

I am looking for something that is not to expensive that I can toy with and have the end result sound better than my POS Sony linear tracking TT. Maybe even cannibalize the parts out of to DIY a plinth and platter.

I don't know how much a Thorens TD160 cost in America, but mine cost about $60,-. There's a lot of info about tweaking this TT on the net, and the mods are fairly simple too.
Anyway, here's more info on what i did!

You should look for a TT that:

1. Has good bearings, check for slack and rumble.
2. Has not been modified by someone else yet.
3. Is complete, or at least has all the vital parts.

Can't think of anything else right now, but you get the picture.

Good luck on choosing a TT!
