Heatmiser,
It definately is not ok to show up and "just do some listening!" You must prepare youself in order that what you will experience at the Seattle DIY Meet doesn't overwhelm you. Synaptic Collapse is not altogether unheard of, although Overdriven Aural Excitement (OAM) is more common, but rapidly recovered from.
My suggestion would be to bring some of your favorite cd's and request that music you're familiar with be played. This will allow you to ease into and be assimulated by the sound without being confronted with unfamiliar music being played by unbelievable gear.

BTW: this initial consultation is provided as a public service:angel:
Best Regards,
TerryO
PS; Actually I think you'll enjoy yourself and everybody's welcome.

Consider me warned.

I'll bring a few CDs in case there's an opportunity for requests, and maybe a case of Red Hook for any medical emergencies that might arise. 😀

I expect there might be a dedicated thread for this later (hopefully with contributions from the people who brought cameras, hint hint) but since I'm the first one home tonight I'd like to say thanks to the crew at Adire and all the talented folks who brought speakers to show off. Great fun!

I won't go into details until we see if a new thread pops up. Suffice it to say that there were some great sounds being made, and these are some awfully nice people to spend a day with.

Well I just got home and turned on the 'puter to see if any impressions had been posted. So far I've come across one, with pictures, at the following URL:

http://av123forum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10817

Good photos by someone that can handle a camera.

I had a good time and met many old friends and hopefully made some new ones. In general, I'd say these meets really do attract some of the nicest people around. The only regret is that none of the Vancouver Island crowd could make it. Although I only took a few courses in Psychology, I find those guys to be nearly as interesting as the speakers they build.
Best Regards,
TerryO😀

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Sorry that was all the pictures i had time for.
details I will hope those who built them will chime in and post the design details.

Tim had a few designs I think it was 7 in total.
Guess I go the memo on 2 pair per person 😉 and Tim missed it.
Darn I could have brough another 14 pair down:xeye:

Anyway was a great time and nice to meet those who i got a few seconds to talk to.

For those who made the show.
Hope the free veneer samples will get put to some use as well as the baffles we gave away.

The person who recieved the RA104.5 if you have any questions feel free to ask me.I was not around for when the prizes were handed out to the DIY.

The Theater with LCR and Tempest horns for subs well what can we say:hot: :hot: :hot:

Thanks to Dan for hosting the Event and I believe Terry for asking about it🙂

All the best

First, I'd like to say thanks to Terry for organizing and especially thanks to Dan for hosting and being just an incredibly warm and inviting person.

My takeaways:

Dan showed off a 1200 Watt class-D plate amp and provided a lot of technical details around it. It was enlightening and he answered quite a few of my questions about class-D in general. Many may or may not know that the amps driving the speakers in the warehouse theatre were all class-D.

Dave's identical twins really impressed me. I walked into the room and assumed we were listening to a much larger set and then about 5 minutes later someone was kind enough to inform me that we were actually listening to these tiny bookshelf speakers. He had two pairs with different crossovers (but no one told us what the diff was) and we did a A/B comparison with them.
Result: no one could tell the difference
The difference: one used cheapie caps and the other used high quality polypropelene.

Terry brought a budget line array with 1" speakers. It made for an interesting demo in the soundfield of a line array and didn't sound that bad at all.

Unfortunately, I had to leave before hearing any other exotics or electronics that were demoed.

Looking forward to the next one!

I think the smaller speakers received more positive comments than the larger ones due to the listening areas being relatively small. It was difficult for the larger designs to not overwhelm the rooms especially the dual Extremis designs. I don't want that statement to be a reflection of Dave Rs speakers. I've heard Dave's designs before and what is impressive is the amount of attention to detail he pays to his designs in order to get surprising performance out of inexpensive components.

Mazeroth,
I tried calling Dave, but his probation officer wouldn't let me talk to him😉

Actually he wasn't home, not too surprising as he works 12 hour days. So I left a message and also sent an e-mail containing the text from your e-mail.
It may be a couple of days for him to get back.
Hope that this helps.
Best Regards,
TerryO

Geek.
No all the veneer i took down was from Formwood,Teamwood, or real wood veneer.
