Seas L26 musical sub - amplifier choice

My search for a musical subwoofer continues. As far as drivers for a sealed configuration go, the Atlas 12 seems nice for $140. Oh yes, the force of the dark side is strong, leading me into the 12-inch high excursion driver relm ...

I would like to get your opinion on a completely different solution that I know nothing about: open baffle using a single driver like the IB15 in an H-frame. Would this work with my Mezzo Proteus speakers? What about amplification and EQ for such a sub?

I had as good as settled on this woofer for sub-dutys myself, but i think i'l se the end of this thread before i order..

one thing about the L26 VS XLS though, the L26 goes flat down to 20Hz, but the XLS rolls off at 26Hz, this is what points me towards the L26, exept for the fact that the seas alu elements kick *** offcource..

i dare put my mony on the L26 being a bit more musical, tight and detailed than the xls, but not being able to deliver the same power?

Here's the response with 43W RMS imput (max excursion of the Seas driver) versus a XLS12 on a 20 Hz tuned box of 55 liters.

Here's the response with 43W RMS imput for Seas (max excursion of the Seas driver) and then with 392W RMS imput on the Peerless (max excursion of the Peerless driver) on a 20 Hz tuned box of 55 liters.

If you go sealed, then Seas win at the same power imput as you can see here, both sealed in a 55 liters box at 24W imput to stay under max linear excursion of the Seas driver at 20 Hz.

50L sub questions

This thread has interested me, as ironically it's really hard in the UK to find decent and reliable suppliers for drivers and amps even though we should in theory be able to get these from Europe.

Currently my small company is designing a 50L sealed sub, which we hope to partner with a pair of Jordan full range satellites we are also producing. The subs sound quality is paramount even though it will also be used for AV [which many argue is more complex and difficult on a sub than stereo]

It needs to go low but retain a good grip on the music, and we're not really after roof raising levels as houses are quite small here 🙂

My longwinded question is, can anyone recommend a high quality 12" driver and amplifier readily available to the UK, suited to a 50L sealed design ?

It doesn't matter if they are supplied from the US or Europe, my main concern is that they can be supplied on a regular and reliable basis, and that the quality of build and sound is paramount. The amp also has to work on a 50Hz 220v~240v supply too !

I've been looking at Acoustic Elegance but would be interested to hear of alternatives.

Acoustic Elegance AV12 is a great idea.
Since you're in Europe, look also at the Peerless XXLS12 or the older Peerless XLS.

For amplifiers, these are the best price/performance ratio I know of:

I don't know if they ship overseas, probably yes for a big customer like you. You can look at this seller of Rythmik Audio also, who sells the basic edition of the 250W and 350W amplifiers:

Yes I've been talking to John at Acoustic Elegance about the 350w Rhythmik amp and his version of the Lambda SB12 driver that he makes. I'm just looking for alternatives in Europe too.

One of the amps I'm also considering is the THOMMESSEN Proteus SW 6.0 500W and would be interested in anyone who had experience with these products. I would also be interested to hear peoples views on what driver [particularly 12"] to partner with this amp for a sealed enclosure.

No sorry, the only design I know of is the Chorus Vertigo XP12 subwoofer.

It uses a XLS12 with a XLS12 passive radiator and a Hypex HS200 amplifier.

The XXLS series is new so not much people are using them, but they are supposed to be better than the old XLS series which was already very good.

The SW300 is a nice subwoofer, the frequency curve is nice but it's targeted at Car Audio, so I guess not much people consider this subwoofer driver.

By the way, if you're going with Rythmik Audio, you could look at their Servo 12" subwoofer driver + amplifier combo.

I will take the summer to think this one over, I have decided not to build anything until fall. I have learned alot lately and I will continue to read up on the subject of high quality bass reproduction. I kind of lean towards making an experiment building an open baffle dipole sub.

Thanks for all your help guys, I'll be back!
