Seas excel or exotic build

Hi all,

It’s my first post here.

I’m looking to build a 2 or 3 way floorstander.
If 2 way it would be the exotic, if 3 it would be seas excel. I can put components together and build good quality cabs but I’m a dunce with working out crossovers. I like the the troels quality, but not his stepped baffles. Has anyone done anything similar in a more conventional or classic design? Can troels electronics be implemented in a slightly different cab? Or maybe a floorstander based around an actual seas based design? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Exotic W8 is eye-wateringly expensive, and doesn't seem to have a particularly linear response for a 2-way, so by elimination, an Excel 3-way would be more reasonable, though not cheap, either.

Approx how big a 3-way are you thinking?

I like the look of the 8" W22NX001 - a 40l closed box gives F6 in the mid 30s with 7mm Xmax.
Or the W26FX001, 50L closed, F6 around the same or better.

The tweeter could be the T35 in Troels' Jantzen waveguide.

Not sure which mid would suit best - most of the Excel midwoofers don't maintain even dispersion past 2khz as you might want for a midrange vs e.g. the old Prestige MCA15, plus the metal cone breakups have to be dealt with.

Your budget's pretty generous - could consider a Bliesma mid-dome, Purifi or Illuminator midrange, e.g. 12MU.

I’m open to other drivers, but it then comes down to working out crossovers and understanding the driver information which I’m not sure about. I’d like to learn but I’m not sure where to start really, is there anyone close to Leeds who could help me understand a few things?!

Not realised this was an active design until now. If I’m being totally honest with myself, I’m open to any design.

My listening position is currently bass light, which I don’t mind really, though would be interesting to know what some kind of augmentation would be like.

System is in one side of a room and has an open stairwell behind the listening position. Speakers in the past have been better rear ported, enhanced from the rear wall, contrary to most other people’s experience I’ve found.

had also thought about a stand mount with a well positioned sub..

I like the principle of the Jenzen illuminator, just not the cab, how detrimental would it be to change the cab to something more conventional looking?

Changing midrange Z-axis offset (flat baffle) means Troels' LR2 design would no longer work as intended. Mods to counteract that might be simple, but what does that mean to a person who never dealt with such. Would you still be satisfied leaving filter network unchanged, remains unknown.
