Absolutely non-toxic (hey, I was *breathing* the stuff!), though if you do arc in it, it can produce low levels of fluorine which is toxic.

Easy to get- our local gas cylinder suppliers have it. If you've got an Air Products distributor nearby, they're a good source.
 
a cheap transformer won't be rated for 5kV, it'll be rated for 2kV or something.

Read the ESL cookbook, he discusses transformer selection quite a bit. The published ratings aren't the ratings you are looking for. The voltage you are quoting is peak to peak, the rated voltages are usually RMS, for example.
 
Hey, i've got a question for the ESL elite: if you use a step up transformer to increase voltage to drive an ESl and you step down voltage from a tube amp to drive a speaker, why can't one drive an ESL directly from the output of a tube amp before the output transformer? or, could one consolidate both transformer ratios and use only one transformer?
 
Not enough voltage in most tube amps; you want to swing a couple of kilovolts, not the puny 200-400 volts of conventional tubes.

A purpose-built amp having an output transformer with, say, a 1 to 5 primary to secondary ratio might do the trick. I'm unaware of anyone making such a transformer, though.
