Hey all,
I finally got my Scinnies today and set them up...the frames need a bit of work (Taupe - the ugliest color ever! Should have just called it Baby Puke color), but that is no issue...They are in good shape with the tweeter and mids all intact - a bit loose - I can blow on them and the will move quite a bit - too loose?
Also, I thought these would be 1 and 4 ohm version and each cut seems to be 3/4", which would indicate a 1 - 4 ohm version, but the back plate just says 1 ohm only (not 1 and 4 ohm). It also has the Aluminum strip terminal that I thought was only part of the 1 - 4 ohm version.
My amp has no issues driving them (KSA-250)...any help? Pics attached
When I remove the cover I will see the birthdate on the top clamp...and if after 1987, its a 1 ohm only.

Congrats and Yep you have the 1 ohm version , measure them to be sure John, when blowing on the ribbons , if they return to center afterwards i would not worry about it , if they deform and stay in that position then Yes too loose ...
The 3/4" cut is the 1/4 ohm ribbon, the plate shows thier wired for 1 ohm use. The true 1ohm ribbon has 1 1/2 " cut space with the same back plate

This is what I was thinking - the cuts are 3/4" spaced...How do I know if they are wired for 1 ohm? There is a cap in series on both so cannot measure at the post (open circuit). I think they are wired for 4 ohm as the previous owner was driving them with an old Marantz 30 watt receiver (no joke). That receiver would have expired real quick if wired for 1 ohm...
Funny how the manual does not go into how to convert from 4 to 1 ohm...
Does the latter model 1 ohm only have the aluminum strip terminal panel?
Yours are 1ohm, the foil resistor on the back is 1ohm 🙂
Al
I've ran them with small amps with no problems, just don't crank the volume, 10w will run them at low levels

I'm jealous already!
When you burn out and tire of them or your amp does literally, you can sell them to me!
BTW
Thanks for the input on the other amps

I was using modified Bryston 6b's for yrs, switch to ClassD, H20-S250 built by Henry Ho , they handle the 1ohm load easy.
Also easy on the hydro bill 🙂 Forget tube's lol, 16 6550's glow purple on 2 ohm taps.

I have been swiching from an Icepower 1000ASP base amp, to a Krell KSA250, to a Krell KSA-50 Clone, and a Quicksilver GLA 40 WPC tube amp off its 1 ohm tap. All sound great, wth the KSa250 sounding the best so far. The Quickies sound pretty nice too, and more SPL than I expected...
Their 1-4 ohm running in 1 ohm, I fried a Ksa 250 with my scins, thats why I got the Brystons in 86. I like the sound of the Icepower, it also got very good reviews on 6moons.

That's a good question that TYU brings up as to why 1 ohm. The 4 ohm version was not received well in comparison in this model.
I have always wondered the countless amps that would not drive this model.
One would think the 4 ohm version would bring more amps to the table and greater talk amongst owners, but that never happened either.
You would think an amp on the edge would not sound so good, even the likes of Belles, Classe, krells, modified Adcoms that drove these well.
And why would the same amps not sound as well according to reviewers on the 4 ohm version?
Very strange
On a different note, John, how big of a room are you listening in and does the bass sound ponderous or somewhat elevated on balance?
Another issue I have wondered about is the midrange and very close tweeters in the specific arrangement of operation. Can you hear anything amiss?
Regards
David

My room is 14' x 18' x 8'. These are probably too big for the room, but so far OK. I have a DEQ2496 correcting bass for the room and really sounds nice. If I drive them straight up, the bass is a bit strong, and shakes the picture frames on the wall. With room correction, they still go quite deep. Much fuller sound than the Duettas...
The M/Tw sounds better than the Duetta Sigs by quite a bit. But they are quite loose, and I will be tensioning them a bit soon (really busy at work now). The bass definitely has a bit of a buzz. I think I should be able to reduce the buzz quite a bit.
I still think my ML CLS and Acoustat Spectras ESLs may have better mids than the Scintillas, but that may change after I tension them up a bit...
Deltastar - hard to believe anything can fry a KSA-250. Was it the KSA-250 or KSA-250s? Mine doesn't even get warm running the Scinnies.

The Scintillas sound the best on 1 ohm, very natural sound and tonial qualities, on 4 ohm they seem to be a tad off, I have Diva's with Graz ribbons, and the stock Scintilla's are better, I find the Acoustats 2+2'equal them in the mids, but fall behind in high and low freq, and their upgraded interfaces. My room is 18x23x10
My Brystons are not friendly with 4 or 8ohm loads, they FRY and shutdown
