Yes indeed , I must apologize with Nanook : he wasn't completely wrong ;
only after the first period 😛
Because it is a voluntary act , as no teacher had asked the whole class to
build speakers . For what ? So the purpose must be clear : for listening to a
reproduction . How is this achieved ? What is/should be the final result ?
I like the big ol' speakers in the gym room 😛😀
(no, it was a theatre and I guess they were...Altec ? )

So next iteration would be : find a good speaker , suitable for the job .
Which job ? To reproduce all frequencies . Ok , this can't be done , let's
start with the famous compromise . At which level and in which ( kind of )
room . 🙂 I was thinking of this ...if the efficiency of a loudspeaker seldom
raises 1% ( well , multy way increases efficiency ) , and we put in it
50 W which is a lot...OK , RMS ! So what we get is around 100 or more dB
which is the sound pressure , result of the 50 W into the coil .
O!
That's why energy transforms ...Thermic , like (old ) lamps

Pico,
Your are correct that there won't be any real full range drivers that can cover the spectrum. But he could build it to have a limited upper frequency cutoff and always add a dome tweeter later and a simple crossover to make it full range so to speak.

Well, the main goal of the speaker is to apply the physics and math to something easier to understand. If I only had paper only my physics and math teacher would understand it and nobody else. If I build a set of speakers by using the math and physics in my papers I could show it in a more concrete way and also have some more fun during the project and stay more motivated.
I'm not aiming to build a very good speaker. As Nanook said, I could always scrap the cabinets and keep the drivers for another project. That's why I don't want to buy some el-cheapo crappy stuff that doesn't have the possibilty to sound good at all.

Did I mention that I have a 10"+1"+WG 😀
And reputed it quite good ,but 😛
recently I feel a little hole ....
I thought my 10" was a full range ! 🙄
Now reality: there's something missing below the tweeter level 😱
Well , maybe up the tweeter level , but that's another point ( low cut
frequency of the system ) and probably domes can't move so much energy
above 20 KHz .
I still believe those speakers give me full 50+50 W sound power 😱

Rullknuffs,
Then you need to determine the size speaker you want to use and ask for some recommendation for that size and at the price point you are able to spend. Believe me you will get more advice in choosing a speaker as there are opinions on that........

How about a tall narrow folded horn with a compression chamber tuned to the baffle step frequency? Full range driver mounted at ear level, the compression chamber should work as a high pass for the horn.
Enough maths used working all that out?

Now seriously : I would try an elliptical speaker, even if
it is difficult to find some. Some stereo tv sets may have
some nice speakers . If you put your hands on an LCD screen,
it's the same 🙂 I used those tiny little speakers (with little boxes already)
with little horns and they became two nice tweeters .
Elliptical speaker may 😕allow a particular dispersion due to its oval shape , if vertically posed , I guess ...

Pico,
A pair of 5'x7" car coaxial speakers would fill that bill if you could find a decent pair. Full range and not much in the way of a crossover needed.

Well, 3" to 5.25" I guess.
I would like to try the little elliptical by Tang Band .
It has also the phase plug . Thou a little specialized , I guess
it could be worth the title of the Thread .

Hi,
10 pages worth and your going round in circles getting nowhere fast.
http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/download/Humble Homemade Hifi_Solo-103_copy.pdf
The FE103 in the above is around your stated budget.
FE103En - Fostex 4 inch Full Range Speaker - Europe Audio
Lots of info on the FE103 on the web, e.g. :

Adding and playing around with T.G's filter is worthwhile,
(using decent quality, not fancy quality components).
rgds, sreten.
