I just had a look at the drawings. The straws are put in the (bass-reflex) port.
What are straws? Straws are used to drink your lemonade right out of the bottle... (Drinking) Straws... Amazing...
I have two kids so I know drinking-straws are sold in at least 2 sizes (diameter that is).

The purpose is probabely to decrease turbulance, port noise or something like that. I've seen it also elsewhere.
Didn't the original ProAc Response 2 have a honeycomb type thing in the port?
So do we use McDonalds straws, or maybe a Taco Bell straw? 😉

In the case of Northcreek the straws are used to tune the port (ie low frequency extension by about 5 Hz) to aid the placement in the room.
Hi,
Does anyone know what the impedance of this speaker is (the ScanSpeak Ref.Monitir)? How low does it get?

I have a graph with a minimum at 180hz of some 6.5 ohms. It's an eight ohm speaker.

Colwaiting_ Thank for your reply. I presume this is an easy driven loudspeaker. With all the Gaincloning going on I will try a pair of gainclones in the near future. If you can zip any measurments you have on this speaker and post them.
Thank you

Alas, a published reference. The scanner will work someday, http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif

I have built the CABS out of 1" MDF, with a 1.25" baffle. These are heavy, and secure, really a nice size.

I'm BACK!!!
Hi to everyone,
As promised I am back after my wedding. I have started building my cabinets. I am using two panels of 19mm MDF glued together for each cabinet side. I have already made the circular openings for the units with my router. At the moment I am gathering the sound damping material. As soon as possible I will post some pictures.

Hi-
I am interested in building the Reference Plus, but I am not fond of the idea of using a ported enclosure. I have a feeling that I can not simply modify the design and not use a port, but keep the box sealed. Maybe I can simply modify the internal volume.... What do you guys think?

Can some one please enlighten me as to why the Reference Plus system uses two different mid-bass drivers, and what exactly is the difference between the two?
The membrame is made of an other material. One of the woofers is focused for the midrange the other more for the bass.
Taco said:The ported design is very good, simply changing the cabinet isn't a good idea.
Ported it is then. What about placing the port at the front of the cabinet? Will this effect the design significantly?
Years ago I purchased a pair of D2905/9900 Revelators and a pair of 18W/8545 woofers. I have long-since lost the crossover design I had intended to use. The Reference Monitor seems to be an ideal speaker for these drivers, but it uses a 18W/8546 woofer.
I'd be interested if anyone could inform me as to what changes to the crossover I need to implement in order to use the 8545 for this speaker design? The only other speaker I've been able to find on the net using these drivers is at:
http://www.audiocostruzioni.com/a_d/diffusori/scan-revelator/scan-revelator.htm
Any other suggestions?
