If you want to save a little bit, you could try selling the ne149w (esp now that they're unobtanium)my two MTM NE149w per side
and get the Faital 5FE120-8 instead.
Might seem ridiculous, I know, but it got very high praise from a highly regarded designer on an US forum (htguide)
Totally off topic, I apologize: I do not believe for several reasons the faital you advise is better. I wanted the flatter NE123W I didn't have sucess to source at the beginning of this year (NLA in 8 ohms from a long time). However the bass driver I selected for the botom is a 12PR320 I had before the price twiced !
About the guys you talk and others and that NLA Peereless silver line : they were good, fine, drivers, certainly a little better than the Satori siblings and a bang for the bucks when launched (the price was twice less that the price I purchased 2 months ago). J. Curl is saying the sb15CAC is better.... I do not believe him while having huge respect for the guy and understand the limitation of his testimonial for good reasons. The travelers is a selling kit with the SB15cac and the Peereless is NLA, so business it is, imho. But those wood pulp drivers do not have severe break ups that hard cones have and this is where I wanted to go comming from a high end loudspeaker with aluminium mid and tweeter I rule like an old car on an apalachian road : caps are evils, and it is hard from the experience I have to make sound good the passive filter that exhibit a lot of caps when you are focused like I am on tones for acoustic music.
So I am ok with this Peereless driver trade off, even so it pushed me to choose a peaaky layout : MTM, in spite of a MT. I will take advantage instead of thinking of the defaults of an MTM from the lower vertical directivity and less THD due to twice less cone mvt... story to see the good side of the coin.
It had been wizer to choose perhaps the kit from our clever wolfteeth member with two good glass fiber peereless in MMT (well more WWT), but it is also for the fun of our hobby I chose the difficult path (no problem I have the rest of my life to improve it as I have already a good hifi enough for my daily needs). If I was half clever vis a vis of the first bad decision and has a GAS moment, I would had purchased a MultiDAC for playing active filter (something like the OKTO8 or the MiniDSP 8 something). But you know what: I am snob and I like the idea of those passive filters : they are fire and forget when you switch on the power button.... 🙂
Of course now the tweeter choice is harder (at least related to my monney... but how fun it is! 😉 ... all this hobby is about equilibrium and it is wonderfull and lively because of that... very complete hobby, no ?)

well, first of all, those indentation/ribs in the cone help a bit with the break upsevere break ups that hard cones have
and second, if the breakup is dealt with properly in the crossover, it won't present any real issues
but I asked the man (JonMarsh/EvilTwin) why he chose the 5fe120 over a sb15 and he said because it's better OVERALL
you can read it in the "Daisy Rey, a Little sister to the Natalie P" thread on htguide
Fwiw I had in hand vifa ne180w and satori mw16p and Sb17cac , obviously great drivers but satori was far cleaner in the midrange, also cac was much cleaner than the vifa, yet the vifa was better in the low end.
I have to say I like those guys for their fun dark side 🙂
Well I have the 14 cm NE149W... I hope what I read from the specs will not disapoint me (seriously, have you read those sota T&S specs and inductance numbers or layout a la Satori but with better surounds ?). And a Faital would be better...but with what miracle seriously?

Hum, I add on GAS list the Wavecor T30WA12... price twiced in few year... so not sure I choose it.
you could add tang band 25-1983 to your list
quite rare and exotic, but available for good price on
