What is the freq range where the comb filtering/lobing is an issue?

I am very interested in this topic myself. I am debating building a center and the coax driver I was thinking is the new SB Acoustics seeing as my mains are the SB Acoustics Sasandu Textreme actives. But I have read so much about lobing. I am in paralysis mode. So I am going to subscribe to this thread. And sit back and watch.
 
11.5" c-t-c for a MTM alignment (5"coax+2x6.5"woofers). The two 6.5" drivers have a cone area somewhere between a 9/10" driver. But if you have 11.5" of c-t-c to play with you can fit an 18" driver beneath the 5"coax. An 18" driver has a cone area of apprx 3.5x10" drivers.

So when you have that much c-t-c flexibility you'd give up a lot of potential LF woofer cone area to make a speaker that looks like a commercial center channel alignment. Alternatively, you could cross from the 5"coax to a single 6.5" woofer (~580Hz) and play all your LF with subwoofers.

I have a center channel that matches my left and right. I don't use it. The stereo phantom is clear enough and has a bigger - though unrealistic - voice soundstage. I wouldn't add a center unless I had spoken voice intelligibility issues. If I wanted to convert to coax I'd just make 5 to 7 of them and replace my existing left and right. However, Floyd Toole pointed out something interesting when you reach 5 to 7 speakers with surround sound. The importance of the off-axis performance and directivity of the speakers decreases as you add more sources. At that point, the spatial cues from the speakers (in the source material) overcome spatial information from room reflections. As you reduce the number of channels down to one (mono) the importance of good off-axis performance increases - or if the source hard pans to one side as if it was mono. Consequently, depending on how your seating is arranged, it might make sense to scrap a coax in favor of a two or three way that covers you seating area better (coaxial tends to narrow directivity when the cone controls the tweeter radiation).

I have a feeling you'd build a center and not be happy with it compared to your Sasandus.
 
Maybe in the build process you could make TM section modular. Then you could experiment(if that's your thing) with different config(MT,MTM, coaxial etc etc).
Lobing wise WTW flavour did not have any issues upto 10-15 degrees(all are my seats within this angle) crossed at 2.5k.
Still MT is obviously superior to just single tweeter even in setup.
Regarding placement of centre channel, some place the centres behind a acoustically transparent screen for better localisation.
