I think its related to the needle. It skates through the first track, but that needle it sounds great.
With a different cartridge, it sounds awful, but does not stake, and the skater is heavier.
Will a needle that sounds pretty darn good cause it to skate ?
Cool.

Well its not skating anymore ... either the skating force knob wasnt' working then, but now it is and twisting it 30000 times ... (doubt it) or the fact that I backed off counterweight and lowered the stylus pressure ... counter intuitive ... but I figured it wasn't going to hurt ... and it works ... in fact its now playing the good clean LP's very well, and the scratched ones, well they will play all night ... and all day if you prefer, ...
Yes, I can have my own elevator music 24/7. All I need is the elevator.
Hope this helps someone who may be having this issue.
Cool.

Perhaps you should invest in a cheap digital stylus force gauge on eBay, certainty is so much better than guess work.. 😀
The problem was that to my mind it defied common sense. I can get the sound right by adjusting the stylus pressure sort of "by ear". Anyway I have no idea what the stylus or needle or cartridge is ... I think its an AT - but model - no clue, long since worn off.
How does it skate due to too much ... I can see it skating due to too little ...
Anyway Its sounding fine and not skating.
Cool.
