I am building a 3 channel power amp for my screen porch (left, right and sub) and want to use sanyo modules. my question is what is the difference between the v,II,XI designations? there is quite a price difference. I would like to use stk4044(100w) for the left and right and stk4050 (200w) for the sub. that should be enough power to give the neighbors a stroke!! any help would be appreciated. thanx
As far as i know 4050 only comes as the"v" model. in the other stk series chips the I II and v designation refers to better thd numbers.
Hopefully they didn't do the same as in the STK30X2 ( STK3042, STK3062, STK3082. STK30102 ) driver chip series. Later versions lacked internal compensation circuits (caps and resistors) so had to check the data sheets very carefully to see what was needed to add to the circuits. (or suffer from serious oscillation) Good luck.
Steve, what was wrong with the STK30x2 etc. drivers? I have the original datasheets and the VAS compensation is a bit weird.
Nothing is wrong with them but - the original version has internal compensation caps and resistors between pins 3-4, 12-13, 4-6, and 10-12. The type ii are functionally equivalent, except there isn't a resistor and cap between 3-4 and 12-13 and in the type iii all are not there. So if subbing for a type i, with a type ii need to add an R-C in each channel, and when using a type iii need to add an R-C and a second C. Use the values in the test circuit in the type iii data sheet (68 pF + 470 ohm for the RC, 15 pF for the C) and amp won't oscillate.

Depends on the rail voltage, load impedance, ambient temperature and whether the heatsink is outside or inside of the amplifier case.
Pacific blue is correct many variables exist but as a rule of thumb ic power dissipation is equal to 1/10Po max for real world applications. thermal resistance is 1.2deg C/W. Total power dissipation on a stk4050v chip is around 240 watts. Of course when it comes to heatsinks bigger is better. good luck

So something with a rating of 1.2C/W should be ok? If power dissapation is 24 watts and ambient temp is lets just say 40C(for when the case heats up) then the chip temp wont go above (1.2*24+40) = 70C approx.... Am i correct. Sorry if these questions are dumb, dont know much about heatsinks etc.
