I have a strange, maybe simple, question. I was checking out the inside of my preamp the other day and noticed they used TL071CP op amps, but some were silver painted and some were regular black.
I'd love to know why!

There was talk about this on diyaudio somewhere in the last year or two, perhaps in one of those long Blowtorch (RIP) threads. TI apparently did this some time in the 1970s or so, there was some reason (excuse?) that someone posted, I forget what it is now. I remember this myself from the floor sweepings that Radio Shack sold way back then.
These were of course the DIP package with a painted-on silver top at the time, there was also the silver metal can package with the pins in a circle.

I remember having a chip with silver printing (I think its just inverse of the standard marking) way back - either a novelty thing or a manufacturing error I suspect. I have a feeling it was a '555 or similar.
