220R Shinkoh Tantalum-1Mega Riken Ohms-220K Takman REX carbon film

And now a little on the Takman REX carbon film @ 1/2 watt.

Well, compared to her sister in metal film, the REX carbon film is warmer sounding and sure enough less nasal and metallic. The timbres are far more natural. This pink Takman also takes a calmer approach to music. It takes it's time while not being too slow.

There is a little coloration and a lack of transparency which limits the amount of air. Instruments separation is ok (like in average). The harmonics are good and notes resonate and last reasonably well.

The bass is big and round with a boost in mid-bass. More immersive then the REY.

Soundstage is very similar then with the metal, with just a little less precise focus/imaging within it.

The articulation and transients of the Takman carbon films are not quite as sharp as their metal counterparts but overall I still found it more coherent and musical then the Takman metal as the pink Takman didn't loose it's footing like the other one. Yet, it also felt a bit congested and confused which hurt the overall enjoyment factor.

It was just not as bad as the metal REY.

Scorpion

P.S. I also included a pic of the two different Takmans in my DCB1. One per channel so I could compare their sound in "real time" using my mono stepped attenuators.

Hi Mark, Renton and all,

Nope, it is not over. At least I hope so. You see, I have two main reasons for not being on the forum for a while. A decision I made some time ago.

The first and most serious one is health related. To cut things straight, I started to feel extreme fatigue and weaker and weaker a few months ago. First thought it was related to work but then further investigations revealed that some blood results came back seriously messed up.

I was diagnosed with a genetic disease: acute hemochromatosis which had started to affect my liver, pancreas, joints and heart. Only treatment (to stop the course): blood draws.

The last autumn, when I was posting here on DIY, I had already learned about my diagnosis and was already having some blood draws here and there but my hematologist decided to increase them to one every two weeks. This took a big toll on my energy level and by mid-december, I had to plee to reduce the blood draws rhythm because I just couldn't make it trough. I sometimes got so week that I could barely make it trough the day.

Still, some fellow hemato-oncologists with whom I work, thought that this level of extreme fatigue and lack of energy couldn't be explained by hemochromatosis and blood draws alone so they ordered more advanced and specific blood samples to try to see what was going on.

I learned a few days before Christmas that some abnormalities were found, especially in the immune system which was all messed up. Since I work in the field, I knew what the doc had in mind...Saw him at the beginning of January, more specific blood tests were done because lot of things seem to point toward a rare type of leukemia. I am still anxiously waiting for the results. And, it just happens to be that I will see my hemato-oncologist @ 10:20 AM, tomorrow, February 18th.

In the meantime, had to stop working full-time to get my strengths back and I try to spend as much quality time with my young children as I can. So much is going trough my head. Not sleeping much, let me tell you.

Sorry if this post is off topic but had to explain it. Should have done it before tough, my fault. And, my choice.

I have done numerous resistors tests. Much more the what has been posted so far. Taken numerous pictures too. Just decided too keep my energy left for other priorities.

Still, I do reckon that I owe you guys some more postings. Since I already have all the notes and pics per resistors swaps, it should not be complicated.

But, first, I really want and need to get this potential leukemia diagnosis behind me. My thoughts are mainly tilted towards THE day of tomorrow and towards my wife and children.

Sorry for the serious delay.
Thanks for your understanding

Sincere regards
Scorpion

P.S. SECOND REASON, I dismantled (before I got really tormented by that potential leukemia thing) the original crossover from my speakers (all LeClanché caps and Vishay Sfernice resistors, point-to-point assembly) and built an external crossover mainly composed of Duelund RS and CAST resistors with some Rike Audio caps here and there. Thing is still in the break-in process PLUS I am still waiting for some 2,2uF which were back order (placed the order December 1st....!!). Should get here any days now. I will post pics ASAP assuming I get good news tomorrow.

Don't let any sense of responsibility to us weigh on you. Spend your energy on your family and daily life. Our obsession with the sound of resistors should be waaaaaay down the list.

Please take care of yourself. I sincerely hope your health is restored and that you'll eventually be able to focus on these other elements again.

Peace,
Tom E

Scorp,
You owe us NOTHING! However, you owe yourself and family everything.
We hope your diagnosis is positive, benign. Your have contributed a great deal to the knowledge base on the "sound" of resistors. Keep a positive attitude and get well.
We wish you all the best.
Ron

Salas, Madisonears, Renron and Mark,

Thanks a lot for your kind words. Really.

I saw my hemato-oncologist yesterday morning and GREAT, GREAT news !!!... I don't have leukemia. The specific blood indicators turned out negative. It was such a relief !! I just don't have the words to describe it. So many concerns, so much anxiety since December.

But the great news were even more than that. All my blood results came back normal (save for hemochromatosis which is a genetic disease)!!! EVERYTHING !!All the previous potential leukemia indicators gone, gone !!

The oncologist thinks that the frequency of blood draws was probably way too much for me, and, sent me in extreme fatigue and weakness while seriously impairing/disturbing my immune system.

Still, I will have to get all my strengths back since I went so low. I will very slowly and gradually get back to working full-time over the next 4-6 months. My doc wants it to be very very smooth. And, I agree.

Gotta take the time necessary for me and my family.

Thanks again for your kind words guys.

Sincere regards
Scorpion

P.S. I will post some pics of REASON #2 later on today.

You have to get reconditioned now, like a NOS electrolytic capacitor before full service.😀

Congrats for the good results.

Here are some pics of REASON #2

Went external crossover. I replaced the LeClanché (very musical BTW) with Duelund RS and some Rike Audio PIO. The Vishay Sfernice resistors were swap with Duelund CAST.

I also made the XO box and the cables from Jupiter 6N copper and cotton. I wrapped the final cables with Teflon tape in order to try to prevent oxidation as much as possible (since cotton offers no protection).

The XO is not over yet. Still, it is working. You'll see a LeClanché 2,2uF to the left which will be replaced with a Duelund RS which was back order (should get here any days).

To the right a 2,2uF Rike Audio is in parallel with a 3,3uF placed underneath. This 3,3uF will be a Duelund RS as well.

Finally, I also intend to replace the air core inductors with Duelund eventually but, at a later date...because it will be a lot of $$$.

I will also slowly and gradually start posting my numerous "unpublished" resistors tests and pictures again. But, I'll take it easy in regards to circumstances.

OK, here they go.

Thanks again to all.

Sincere regards guys
Scorpion

So glad to hear some good new from you Scorpion.
Excellent, Keep it that way and steer clear of the vampires for a while.
Thanks for the photos, very interesting. I am confused about the wrap of wire around the XO box though. Duh. Looks like the spiders were working overtime. 🙂

My grandson goes in next week for his second open heart surgery, just turned one last week, I hope his results are as good as yours were.
Take time to have fun and enjoy your new lease on life. We do have to return it at sometime. 😉

Hi Renron,

Thanks for your words. I am looking forward on life with yesterday's great news. I will just need some time to renew my strengths and become the old me again.

I am not sure I get what you meant by :"I am confused about the wrap of wire around the box though". All the added Jupiter wires are 20 inches in length. It doesn't show on the pics because some needed a shorter path/lenght to get to external XO and others a longer one. If you see a longer length outside the speakers, it means it's shorter inside and vice versa. At the end of the day, all internal speaker wires were "extended" by 20 inches.

I thought that the length ratios of wires getting to the XO might have been calculated by the designers to get maximum synergy and or timing/coherence while going trough the parts (speed and/or timing of signals). Then again, maybe not. But, that was the idea behind doing it this way. Maybe I got it wrong...but the sound is so coherent and musical that I guess it worked. At least, in some ways.

As far as your grandson's upcoming heart surgery. I wish him all the very best. Heart surgery knowledge and technologies have really improved an gone a long way in recent years. Before teaching in hemato-oncology, I used to work for years at the ICU @ the CHUM hospital of Montreal (Hotel-Dieu pavilion) where we were treating almost nothing but heart surgery patients fresh from the O.R. In the vast majority of cases, the outcomes were very very good. Of course, it is a big surgery but the teams are very specialized and informed. They should take great care of your grandson.

Again, I sincerely wish him all the best.

Regards
Scorpion

Renron,

I read your last post again. When talking about the "spiders wires", were you talking about what can be seen on the top cover?

If so, they are " dried herbs filaments " (well, kind of) stuck between two layers of clear plexiglass.

It gave a more "modern" style to the package and therefore my external XO project could cut it with the WAF....Had to conceed to get some approval !!! These are only on the top cover as can be seen on the pics without it.

Hope I understood you correctly.
