SABA Green-Cone

Cute ! Several doubts here!
The sound of the video is the original of the cabinet?
Why the stepped baffle in the upper sector? Wouldn't it be increasing the diffraction that the design already has by placing the speakers behind the panel?
What SABA speakers were used?
What about the crossover network?
Did you do that?

Hello pillo69

Congratulations, 🙂 they were very handmade, I like the finishing moldings, antique furniture style.
Just out of curiosity, as it is difficult to evaluate through YT and at the moment I am listening with a couple of cheap computer speakers, but what can you tell us about the bass? The tuning tube seems small for the size of the cabinet ....

I love to see these kinds of antiques brought into modern duty. Bravo.

Is the “tweeter” in its own sub-enclosure? It should be.

Those driver cut-outs really need a 45° chamfer (that will screw up you vinyl). You are gonna have a lot of spray off the exisitng ones.

And the box is decidely large enuff that bracing is required.

it is difficult to evaluate through YT

Given all the complications that first making something to put it up on YouTube, then YouTube often butchers the quality and then we are playing it back on something else.

Very little idea of what they really sound like is not really possible. The important stuff is all lost.

And taking 4 minutes to watch a video where a half doaen pictures would be as suitable, quicker, and convey at least as much info. AFAIC a waste of time. I was patient enuff to watch this one as the drivers are interesting.

Hi Dave,

I have to second your words, as I never understood how people are able to judge a systems quality with a YT video. I can´t do that at all and find it totally useless.

Maybe I´m too old, but even listening to something in reality (like at hifi fairs) may not tell the full story if you´re not in control of all aspects...and know the room well!

All the best

I understand that sound with a mobile phone and through YouTube does not offer the quintessence of HIFI.

I just wanted to show the work done on a DIY forum.

Nor do I have so much lost, I have invested 250 euros in some boxes that sound excellent to me, with their 95-96dB.

I'm sorry if my intervention was inopportune.

Not inopportune at all.
Great to see those old drives in use! The great thing about DIY is that you can go as far as you want with designs and that there are people here who have a lot of knowledge and are willing to help if you decide to go deeper.
What really matters is that you built it and you like it.
Enjoy your efforts!

I just heard the sound from the YT video again, this time with a good pair of headphones, and to my ears I notice that some bass is lacking, especially "punch" on the subject of the second video.

Nothing that cannot be solved, the general sound seems good, perhaps it is typical of the tubes used (845?), And the speakers of those years, but the addition of a subwoofer may be the solution if the OP wants to "fix" it. .
I say this because it is a typical "vintage" style configuration, and generally its followers, - as seems to be the case with Josè -, want "THAT sound".
Something absolutely respectable, of course, the world of audio is very broad in terms of preferences, both in music styles and in the type of sound sought.
I remember when I started building my subwoofers and someone mentioned "not much to hear below 40Hz".
If the author of the comment listened to organ music like me (among others) he would not have said that, haha)

I remembered reading something from TG regarding SABA's Green Cones speakers, here it is:

I share that, the intention is to help, hence the various comments here, should be taken as a constructive criticism !!!

Clarified point, nobody wants you to undo the boxes and start new ones, but maybe if you accept some advice like the one of the bigger tuning tube (you have used software, which one?) Or the reinforcements that Dave mentioned ...

These drivers are amazing with in their limits.
In the box or open baffle with an set amp they produce Realy nice sound.
Not going to dig deep or or have bass punch.
I had a pair and lost them in a house fire about 20 years ago.
Don't under estimate these, for realistic vocal reproduction the are almost spooky.

Hello The tweeters are not encapsulated yet, I plan to make a box to cover them and fill them with insulation.
The placed bass-reflex does not have an extension as it does not yet know how to calculate (4cm diameter).
The volume of the boxes is 30 liters. As a filter for tweeter I have used a 2.2uF capacitor. I thought of trying a filter similar to the one in the following link, but I wanted to try first in case it was necessary to find an 8 "woofer and place it in a separate closed box, below the existing boxes.

Đo đạc va thiết kế phan tần cho bộ loa 2way sử dụng driver Saba 5298 – Audible Hertz Shop

The current sound is very good. A little more bass perhaps would complete the boxes better. I usually listen to classical or jazz music preferably, although I also like other types of music such as Dire Straits, Beattles, Pink floid, ......

Volume before or after the tweeter enclosure? Any idea what the T/S of the driver is?

2.2uF gives a nominal 10k XO if 8 ohms, 20k if 4 ohms, 5k if 16 ohms. Whatever the case may be, with no filter on the midbass you want to bring it in just were the midWoofer starts to roll off.

I expect the XO could be as low as about 500 Hz but that would require at least an inductor on the midWoofer.

I think you should measure them or let them measured so you can create the right filter to let the tweeter fil in where it's needed (at the point where the Saba falls of). It's a great driver, but as they are old without measurements it's hard to do it right and it would be a shame to do it wrong. T/S will be not like when they left the factory i'm afraid as they age and change over time.

I heared a Saba greencone with a supertweeter (actually a normal audax dome tweeter but crossed over high at 8kHz) and a subwoofer setup and it does sound very good that way. But that guy measured them and build his cabinet from the measured T/S (big aperiodic vented).
