S-video lay with extension power cord?

Hello All,

I have a question.

Ok first my situation, I have an ASK IMPACT VGA LCD panel on top of an Elmo HP-4K OHP pointing at a portable tripod 70" screen. Works great, very happy.

The whole reason I got this set-up together is to have movie/ sports-game nights in the back yard (while drinking beer and grilling smokies).

The Audio/Video source I want to use outside is from regular cable(not a must) but DirecTV and from my PC ATI All-in-wonder s-video out (for SVCD,DVD,DivX, etc...) is a must.

So I have to have an extension cord running out to the middle of my backyard to the projector to power it up to shine against the screen on the side of my house, nothing I can do to avoid that, however I don't want to much cabling running through my house, out the screen door, over the deck etc... out to the AV cart.

The projector is going to be on a cart with my old sony stereo and speakers (for the audio) on the bottom rack of this A/V cart. I want to avoid hauling my PC outside with it or haveing to have another HTPC as well.

So I figured I can leave the video source inside and just send the video and audio outside, into the cheesebox VGA converter, then into my panel. My panel only has VGA input.

So my options are

1) PC or DSS s-video and audio out via a 50 foot s-video/L+R audio combo cable into cheesebox TV to VGA scan converter then into panel and stereo. (top picture - eBay item # 3077134891)

or

2) PC or DSS RCA video out into Audio/Video sender (bottom picture - eBay item # 2986019187) beam signal through the air to reciver, into cheesebox, into panel and stereo

I guess the s-video would give the best picture quality over an RCA video jack, but would such a length of cable be an issue, and could I bundle the s-video/L+R audio cable to an extension cord (power), or would that cause interferance?

I like the idea of the wireless video/audio sender, because then I would only need a power extension cord running from an outside plug across my grass to the AV cart. I could then just plug in the sender (transmitter part) to either my PC, or DSS or VCR with out much trouble.

So to sum it up, my question, what I want to know is....

Can I bundle (like zip tie together) an outdoor 50 foot extension (power) cord to a s-video and L+R audio cable (like in picture) together with out any interferance, and is 50 foot to long to send signals like i need for my setup ?

The cable route will be the cheapest, and if I tie them all together and plug into the wall for power where the PC or DSS is, it will still only be like one cable to run outside to the AV cart. And since the wirless option only starts with an RCA type video input (instead of S-video), it can only suffer from the trip through space, and with only a 4000 lumen projector and a 640 X 480 res panel, I can't afford to lose ANY picture quality.

Any input/solutions/insight would be helpful, Thanks in advance.

I too have been eyeing one of those wireless video senders, but have not been able to find one that does s-video, so haven't bought one.
In my old house, instead of a sender, I had an s-video cable, rg-6 coaxial cable, L/R Audio cable, and a single rca for coaxial digital audio, all in 50 ft lengths which went down into my basement, over to the living room, and straight up to the entertainment center. I didn't send power with it. However, when we set up those cables, we also ran a new 30 amp dedicated circuit to power the entertainment center, and it ran directly beside(touching) about 15 feet of the other cables. I saw no apparent interference from this setup. One thing I will say which should seem obvious is that the digital audio sounded considerably better than the analog audio over the 50 foot run.
So I'd say go for it. Get yourself a nice roll of 1" diameter split loom tubing to easily bundle your cables all together.
Spend the extra money on the higher quality cables with gold plate connectors instead of chrome, as at 50 ft it will make a difference.
Good Luck!

Also, I'd recommend buying the L/R audio cable seperately from the svideo cable. Most of the pre bundled S-vid L/R cables have crappy small diameter wires for the audio. If you buy the audio seperately, you can find a good heasviy guage set.

Here's some of the split loom I was talking about in 25 ft lengths:

You could buy 2 or contact the guy and see if he has a 50 ft length available.
Hope I've helped.

Current topic and old post

Hi Moto !!!

Long time.. I agree with both threads above, shielding for the audio and video seperate is very much the key. JUt treat it like a live band gig, and use audio patch cables of that quality for all the av you want to run. as far as power, it wont bug that quality of cabling as the other post members have said rightly.

Listen I have been really curious how you went with your hot spot issue, and that thread closed..like talk about waiting with baited breath to hear!!!!!

Shoot me an email and let me know how thw transparencies worked, did you wind up scratching, featherig or grafitti with a pressure pack man??
