this is another question which i'm hoping to answer for my commercial projector mods, but it also applies to you folks - it is possible, though tricky, to run a pair of stacked lcds to boost contrast - alignment is an obvious issue
but my main reservation to plugging my stacked lcds into the control board and powering up, is that i don't want to damage either the lcds or the board by trying it - can anyone tell me if this is possible ?
you could certainly do this by running each lcd off its own controlling device, but i'd really rather avoid that if possible as i'd have to extend the ribbon cables and have a whole second projector running alongside the displaying one
any help appreciated !

very difficult, how are you going to align 2 pixels? not to talk about light's diffraction around the first lcd's pixels..
for commercial projectors like mine, you would be able to 'skewer' both lcds using the same screws, the rgb alignment is fixed during original manufacture, and the lcds are screwed to the prism assembly
as for diy, tft based projectors, yes, alignment would be difficult, but by no means impossible, especially if the tfts had finely adjustable brackets e.g. threaded nut and bolt holders for x/y adjustment

once the alignment methods were worked out, and assuming the electronics don't die from the extra panel, and once you have designed a way to move the whole shebang without messing up the alignment, you will probably have been better off getting a higher-contrast panel in the first place.
