Running a 60Hz receiver on 50Hz

Hi Guys:

I am hoping someone can help me with the following:

I used to own a Pioneer Elite VSX-33, and loved it. I sold it since I was moving to the Middle East for a few years on assignment. I sold it for $300 last month on ebay, Now that I am in the ME; I am looking at replacement receivers here that have 12v triggers and a full complement of Pre-outs (like the VSX-33 had) but nothing short of $1450 has that in the newer models. So I do need 12v triggers and 5.1 pre outs as a minimum, and user controllable EQ (Like the MCACC) . I don't care about other stuff. I won't use the receiver's power amp section, I have my own power amps to do that work. I just need the cheapest way to switch the 1080p signal that can decode current blu-ray formats AND have MCACC capability.

So I going back to thinking, on my next trip to the US, I will buy a used VSX-33 for $300 and have it shipped here.

The issue is, the US models are 120v 60Hz devices with no voltage selector. The ME devices are 240v 50Hz also with no voltage selectors...

I have a step down trafo to resolve voltage conversion...

Secondly and more importantly, will the 50Hz supplies here interfere with any of the receiver's circuits and not allow it to power on or malfunction ? (I know Krell has some chips that complain you up if you try that).

Can any one help shed some light on both these questions? Thank you.

If the transformer is VERY POORLY specified then it might complain at 50Hz. MOST 60Hz transformers will work at 50Hz and the same the other way around.

If you already have the step down transformer, try it. Keep an eye on the temperature of the transformer, if it is struggling it will get too hot.

Thanks. So I will not be using the power amp section of the receiver, so very little load will be placed on it. My concern was more related to timing and other trap circuits that might not allow operation into a "grey market" region... you know like Krell does...

Makes sense to me... but companies are not always logical when it comes to control and money... As I said, krell doe snot allow cross continent devices to be run, they have frequency sense chips that do not allow the unit to turn on...
