I drill round holes and use powercon. Much better then IEC.

That would work fine (and reduce the needed height), by using the board just for filling the hole,
not for mounting. I've done that before when replacing slide switches with miniature toggle switches.

Let’s not pretend like this isn’t a huge problem, all of my vintage gear would have a proper plug sockets on them if this weren’t a giant PITA...I haven’t been able to find a round hole either but someone must make this?

See post #17 for a round IEC power inlet, rather large though.
Do you have a round hole punch large enough to use with an adapter plate?
A big advantage of the standard IEC is its compactness.
