Rotel RDD-980 intermittently won’t read ToC

I have a Rotel RDD-980 that occasionally won’t read the ToC on any random cd. It will display “err” after I close the tray. Now the funny thing is that if I open and close the tray 2 or 3 times it suddenly does read the ToC and plays the whole CD perfectly fine with no glitches or skipping.
I carefully cleaned the lens but that didn’t resolve the issue.
Does anyone with experience on CDM-9/65 transports have any idea what could be causing this ?
I’ve read somewhere that sometimes the disc platter tends to shift down over time on the disc motor spindle with these transports causing focus errors. I’ve been searching this forum for a couple of hours today to see if I could find some more information but haven’t been able to find a thread on this. Maybe I’m not using the right search term. Anyone able to help ?
Also, is there any way I can get an eye pattern from this player ? I have a scope but can’t find an RF test point on the circuit board. Nothing about this in the service manual either.

I checked the tray switch. It works fine (tested with a Fluke while manually opening and closing the tray).
Since I had the mech out of the player I now also cleaned the semi-transparent mirror at the bottom of the laser and checked the swing arm for smooth operation. Everything looks and works fine but I still have the same issue : the player sometimes doesn’t read the ToC and displays “err”. Opening and closing the tray again results in the ToC being read and the disc starting to play normally without skipping until the end (even with 70+ minutes discs).
I also should mention that when the error occurs the disc continues to spin indefinitely at what I estimate is about 500 rpm (like at the beginning of a disc).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated !

I have done a few things for you; look at U191, U192 and in particular the D191 and T191.

Make sure the +5V is stable (reference for U191 comparators).

I found the service manual and the U191 DIL8 pinout (both attached)

If you don't have any idea how to use the info I provided... by far the best thing to do is to take the player to an electronics engineer... before any further damage is caused.

Thank you both for your help. Very much appreciated.

After hours of researching the issue I'm starting to think it is a mechanical problem. I'm going to clean and lubricate the pivot bearing on the swing arm.

When I hold the player up by the front panel about 8 - 10 cms the problem is gone. Reads the ToC every time. I tried this after reading a post from someone who had the same issue with a CDM-9/65. He was able to solve it by cleaning and lubricating the swing arm.

I'll post the result after I have a chance to do this.

Download the SAA7310GP pdf. Look at "HF Input" into a DATA SLICER.
It is PIN 32

... after a closer look, the schematics diagram does state the "HF" point, it's not really readable, but it's there... see attached
