Hello there,
I bought this CDP almost 10 years ago and it always had some issues.
A week or two after I bought it, CD stopped playing suddenly. Stop and play buttons were having effects only on the display but the cd was spinning randomly and no sound was coming out. Sometimes the cd was spinning superfast and it was not stopping until I removed the power.
Switching off the cdp fixed the problem but after few days, the cd stopped working and reading cd's.
I brought it back to the store (still under warranty), they got it fixed without telling me what they do, but after one or two months the problems were back.
At that time I had to relocate and the cdp was stored in his box until a month ago, when I had space to set it up again. The cdp was not reading cd's at all (with open chassis, insert a cd, spins few degrees, 3 times, then "no disc" on display), so I thought the laser/drive unit was broken (KSM-213CCM). I bought a new one, I installed it, and the cdp was working perfectly as it was brand new. Anyway I spoke too soon: when I played a cd a second time, the player started to skip playing for one sec. I could see the laser group being re-adjusted, like it lost the track. After few hours of playing with the same original cd, I have 3 kind of behaviours:
1) the cdp has absolutely no problem for the whole lenght of the cd
2) the cdp stops playing for one sec, then goes on, happens few times randomly
3) the cdp stops playing, cd stops, time on display is stucked and play/stop buttons have no effects on the cd, or the display. After some fiddling with buttons the cd may start spinning superfast until I switch off the power. Then the cdp goes back to 1) or 2)
Do you have any idea on what is the real problem, given that the drive unit is brand new? clock problem? power supply problem? bad contact somewhere, like clock or power to the drive unit?
I looked online but I did not found any similar problem that was not solved after replacing the drive unit. It looks to me that something is not working properly and is sort of wearing off the new drive unit as well.
Sorry for my poor description of the problem but the behavior is very random. Feel free to ask more questions or clarifications.
Many many thanks for your help...
Riccardo

The Laser assy flat/flex connection cable needs to be replaced.
This is more common fault than faulty laser.

As Max said.
The original Philips CD players used to suffer from work hardening of the ribbon cables. In time this would make the laser operation erratic.

Standard Sony CDP fault.
The flex cable flat conductors fatigue at fold points, usually near to the connectors.

Thanks again for all the advises.
As already said the cdp was used for very few hours, so, before replacing the cable, I tried first to remove it and carefully clean both ends with denaturated alcohol.
I had the cdp running in a loop for a day without problem, at least no more "no disc" message or stucked status. So far so good... I will try to make some tests and check that also the playing is not stopping at all.
When I put back the cover I heard some noise when the cd was spinning, like the disc was touching something inside. I opened again and no noise. So I put back the cover without tightening the screws too much and that fixed everything. Is that possible that too tight screws may bend the cover and disturb the spinning disc?

I'll see that and raise you one
I've got a different weird one - certain (brand new, plays fine on the PC ) CDs are showing as "no disc". eg. Sigur Rós "Valtari"
Does anyone know if this is to do with the HDCD support?
