Room setup/speaker placement

Hi all,

I hope I'm posting this in an appropriate category since I couldn't find one that matched exactly. I'm also having trouble posting pics but will keep trying.

I'm looking to get advise on where to place my stereo. My options are my living room and basement, but neither one is completely desirable. I live in a split level house which means my living room opens to an entrance, but it also contains a large window and another opening to the kitchen. I also have a sloped ceiling. Because of this, I've placed the speakers as seen in the pics.

The basement is a little more straight forward (color choices were the previous residents...), but there are odd angles there, as well. I'm also afraid of overloading the power since I run my Wi-Fi and media server from there. (I've flipped the breaker just by running the lights, TV and vacuum down there.)

Any suggestions on where to place my stuff would be welcome. I'm also looking to do some sort of room conditioning once I select a location so if there are things that can be done to improve one room over the other, please let me know.

Basements are seldom good acoustically, and usually have low ceilings, which is very bad. If fully finished, with carpeting, it might be ok. Can you post floor plans?
