I have an older Rockford 1000.1 That I recently started using again. The other day I had the music up loud and started to smell a little electrical smoke, then I heard a "click" almost like a relay clicking sound from the amp, then lost power. (blew fuse)
I recently added a RF 3sixty line driver, I accidentally had it turned up all the way when this happened.
I D/C the amp, put a 40A fuse in to check wiring, it was fine. I gave the amp power only again and it immediately blew the fuse. Opened the amp, and then noticed a bad spot on a cap.

Do you think this is the culprit of the short? and if so, where can I find a new cap? I have looked for quite a few hours online but haven't found one that will work. everything else on the board looks great.

I am extremely novice at this kind of stuff, but I want to try and fix this one before I buy a new RF amp, as I am sure this old one is better than any of the new ones..

That mark is likely from the drill chuck when the screws were being installed. It's not likely to be a problem. It's likely that the output transistors are shorted. The output transistors are the ones marked IRF3415 and IRF6215.

Thanks for the pointing in the right direction. I never thought about the mark being from the driver chuck, but I'm pretty sure you are right, like some kind of forensic detective lol.

After reading the Basic Car Audio Amp Repair write up (which was an awesome read) weighing cost of new amp to probability of me being able to fix this one with little frustration, I decided to just buy a new one. 🙁 I went with the RF T1000-1BDCP 1000w constant power.
I HATE to just throw this one in the dumpster, is there a market for broken older RF amps?
