Field Coil Lowthers

Posted by rjbond3rd "do high-end Lowthers generally sound this smooth, or is the field coil contributing to that? Or stated another way, what does the field coil contribute in terms of the response? Does cranking the voltage up (or down) smooth out the high end?"

The Field coil is unusually smooth and detailed. Cranking the voltage down will result in the sound becoming softer, and the low end being more extended. Increasing the voltage makes the sound harder, brings up the high end response, and hurts low end response. You can tune your system to a certain degree using this.

Dave,

The efficiency above the horn’s bandwidth is as you have stated.

An anechoic chamber was not used in testing the efficiency of our loudspeakers. As is stated on our website our goal is: “The balance between bass, midrange and treble is modeled after the balance achieved in a live music experience.”

By intent, the design of our ELATION loudspeaker places a priority on live musicality over measured specifications. We favor the balance achieved in a jazz club or small venue performance hall with the added room contributions present in a live venue. As such we fully utilize room gain to boost efficiency at certain frequencies. In so doing we have measured up to 10db of efficiency gain at lower frequencies, with careful room placement. The 99db efficiency quoted is the maximum efficiency we have achieved in the lower frequencies as measured in room (room size; 10’ X 14’ X 8’).

Pictures will be available soon on our website for ELATION. The pair from RMAF 2009 is an early production prototype and does not adequately reflect the aesthetics of the final production ELATION.

Thank You,

Well I like both Lowther Field Coil Drivers and the Lotus Group Granada. The Feastrex field coil drivers is simply wonderful... but alas I for one will never afford to own a pair. I think those drivers are about $40k...
But the Lowthers... I can afford that!
I am waiting for mine to show up someday soon...
Jon played a record in his room...some master first addition... cant remember the name. He played it, I listened... My comment after listening... Jon, Thats nothin special it just sounds exactly like some guy sittin there playing a guitar.
Nelson, I need...really need that Xover. Great and wonderful work sir.
Maybe you or Jon can tell us a bit about the Xover????
The J2 were warm and very happy sounding as well. I hope the boys do well. They, as always, are a pleasure to be around.
Perhaps we will hear more bout the LFCD (Lowther Field Coil Drivers)

Jon,

Congratulations on your boldness in pursuing a Lowther America field coil driver. I heard and appreciated the performance of your RMAF show prototype. How soon will the Lowther field coil driver be available? Have you decided on pricing?

I am confident your product will encourage more audio enthusiasts to enjoy the flexibility and tonal beauty that is possible with a well engineered field coil driver.

Congratulations,

10 B4 prototypes were floated around for comment, and
based on the feedback, I will probably eliminate the
baffle-step, notch, and bass eq functions.

In other words, people seem to want a vanilla crossover.

Fine by me, I will probably kick it out the door in December.

😎

Your sample size is too small and to skewed for good statistical analysis. I think increasing it by at least one Minnesotan would be a good step in righting that wrong.

Romy and I discovered this exact set of activities when we placed a field coil in his mid range horn CD. He was so dismayed by having an adjustable driver he stopped the experiment. Glad to see you treating this as an opportunity.

By the by, do still listen to the EnABL'd PM6a drivers?

Bud

It is too bad you are removing those features, I think it would be a real advantage and make the unit much more flexible to include the extra filter capabilities.

Oh, please, Nelson! 🙂 The versatility of the B4 is just plain impressive! There is no single reason to complain about it, because all unwanted filters can be bypassed. Even if you use just a fraction of them, it's good to know that you can go back to it in future projects. It would be too bad if this fine work would be castrated! 🙂
