Reviving or retrofitting an Infocus

Been lurking here a LONG time. Great site and I've learned a lot.

I recently was given an Infocus LP750 that wasn't working; when powered up there is an orange color around the main power button, but nothing happens. I have taken it apart and can find no damage- other than a crack in the feflector part of the lamp.

I don't know much about these things and I'm not much of an electronics person.

I have dabbled with some designs of DIY projectors, wanting to make something that would use car headlight lamps, and put out as good a picture as the Zoombox. Now that I have the Infocus, I'm really keen on getting it to work.

Here's what I know about it: it was used at a school and was dropped. It no longer works. No rattling sounds of anything broken, no case damage, no damage inside.

I am hesitant to buy a new lamp for several hundred dolars, as maybe something else is wrong with it.

Is there a way to bypass the lamp and get it to fire up to check that the LCD, fans etc work?

Has anyone done a retrofit on this kind of projector?

Am I better off just waiting for the EVO v1.1 projectors from Lumenlab? All I really want is to be able to do about an 96" screen in my basement. I almost got the Zoombox and would have if I'd found it on sale after christmas.

And finally, does anyone know anything about Sony's LED projector for this year? I remember an article last year of Sony unveiling some new LED projector specifically for home use (screens under 108").

Thanks for any help or answers.
