revisiting simple se kt88

I built the simple se kt88 a few years ago and it is great. I had it connected to huge speakers and it sounded great. Those speakers are gone now and need to find something efficient enough to run this amp, or do i need to build a preamp? Would like to stay under 500.00 for speakers.
I considered buying Klipsch heresy. Any advice would be appreciated.

MY $.02 ....

My $.02... with your budget, I would suggest looking for a pair of Klipsch KG-4's (94db).... Add the Bob Crites mods, especially the titanium diaphragms, and you'll have speakers that love tubes. The wife liked mine so much, I had to buy her a pair for her woman cave... I also use a pair of JBL 4331b's (94 db and large-15" woofer ) that sound great with any of my tube amps, but probably just a tad out of your budget. Like I said...just my $.02.

If you find a good deal on a pair of Heresys, don't cross them off the list!

That's what I'm currently using (IIs with rebuilt crossovers and Crite's titanium tweeter diaphragms). Plenty loud in just triode mode on my 'integrated' SSE (rarely past 12 o clock on the volume pot). Spend some time tweaking placement and they're very good.

I have been searching for a new DIY build, but I still haven't found much to match the sensitivity in such a relatively compact size. Pi's are supposed to be good as well as the diysoundgroup.com designs though.
