I qualified in 1990 as an electronics engineer and worked on high speed audio copiers and high current, low voltage linear power supplies. Ever tried designing and fault finding equalised audio at 300KHz or a 5V rail sitting at 160 amps?? Textbook it was not...
In about 1995 I found that operating the kit was much more fun and paid far better, so I started out concert touring. This was to be my life for the next 15 years, working all over Europe with loads of major bands at famous venues like the Royal Albert Hall in London as system tech, designing and setting up huge PA and video rigs.
The thing is, when you are pushing 40, living on a tour bus for weeks on end starts to lose its gloss, so I now work for an events company, doing mainly automotive events like motor shows and launches. I also write movie reviews for another forum - www.avforums.com
I think I have forgotten more about electronics than I ever knew, but I have a project to build my own 10" sub, complete with processor and amp. The woodwork has been built by a cabinet maker, the driver is the best I can afford and the electronics... getting there! I also have tactile transducers in the sofa, so the processor has both high and low pass filters and a channel of parametric EQ to integrate the whole thing. The amp is 3 x 200W, 2 for the dual voice coil sub and one for the thumpers. The power supply is a 750VA unit with high regulation stabilised smoothing.
I will post some info as the project progresses, but we are almost at the breadboarding stage for the processor and the amp is a design I developed in the 90s as a simple, scalable mosfet, where more power is simply more output devices and upping the supply rails.
