Retired in Arkansas

Hello everyone!

I'm a recently retired electrical engineer with time on my hands. I always liked electronics growing up and fiddled with making stuff on and off until college and career consumed much of time. Recently I have been going over my 1979 era stereo equipment* and picked up a desire to make a set of speakers. The AR-18's are great little speakers but want something with a bit better performance and more visually appealing.

* My original stuff. All purchased at Service Merchandise (I miss that store) with the exception of the AR-18's.
Technics SU-7300 Int. Amp
Pioneer TX-6800 Tuner
Pioneer PL-518 Turntable
Acoutic Research AR-18 Speakers

Welcome Chris. Congrats on your retirement, hope you have lots of things lined up to keep you strong in mind and body. The time I expect is close for me and I am hoping to follow my own advice and not wither away. If I do, it will be somewhere sunny and warm and I'll do so with Margarita in hand. 😉

Hi Chris.
If You really want performance in SPL You have to go the PA driver route.
Hi-fi stuff isn't really very efficient.
I did restore my old 40 Year Pioneer system and found out that my Celestion expensive DL8 speakers were very silent compared to 10'' Eighteensound drivers from another PA speakers. Just 89dB compared to 98 dB on the PA ones.
The AR-18 are 86 dB, so silent too.
If the Celestions sound more Hi-fi ?? I can't tell the difference apart from the bass response which is better on the PA drivers, but I don't have audiophile ears.
Start by cleaning / restoring Your system first, it surely will help.

Holy Catfish Batman,

"Service Merchandise", now that is a name I have not heard in years. I spent lots of money there as well "Tag Heuer" watch, Winchester Super X 22 cal ammo, "JVC" VHS recorder.

Welcome to "DIY" Audio.

Thanks to all for the welcome. Technical forums tend to have better comradery that is always appreciated.

Welcome!

I have quite a number of friends who retired to Arkansas!

I'm originally from Wiscosin but spent some time in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvannia and Swedesboro, New Jersey before ending up in Arkansas. Low cost of living but miss having actual seasons.
