Restoring cassette deck`s pinch roller - a couple questions

Hi all,

Well, actually it boils down to one question:

What shape a pinch roller should have? I mean the part that meets the capstan shaft. Is it supposed to be perfectly flat, or rather slightly convex?

I`m trying to make a Sony TC-K515S great again, but I encountered some resistance in form of deformed pinch roller. I sanded off the deformed surface and now the roller is as flat as I could make it. It doesn`t visibly mangle tape anymore, but there are still sound artifacts, most probably because of uneven pressure on the capstan shaft. I suspect that I could make it too flat.
I examined rollers in my other decks and all are slightly convex, however since the other decks are quite old, I can`t tell if it`s not natural wear.

The pinch roller can be deformed/hardened/crystalized/cracked/gooed or all of the above .

Or simply its reduced diameter (by sanding) doesn´t apply the proper pressure.

I would get a new one ... not N.O.S. of course, rubber has a definite and quite short shelf life.
