640*480 is not enough for watching dvds if the projected image will be quite large. now i was wondering, if i resized my desktop to 640*480 and played a dvd on my pc, would that work for large images? i.e. will the projected resolution be that of the desktop (640/480) or of the dvd being played (720/480)?

An lcds res can never be changed. It can be *virtually* changed, but not physically. 640x480 will always be 640x480. If you have access to a projector at all, I'd go and use 640x480 material onit and then see if that res is satisfactory.
