I'm adding a few Mills MRA-12 resistors to my crossovers and there isn't room to secure them to the board. Would they work just as well with the leads solderd to connections and the resistors suspended above the board?
As long as they don’t vibrate too much. The vibration of the solder joint can make the metal act funky(for lack of a better term) changing the resistance during compression and expansion. Overlap the two conductors to make a long solder joint so that doesn’t happen. You can always add wires to the resistors and mount them remotely. The additional wire won’t add to the resistance enough to worry about.
Then you do want the resistors suspended in the air above the board, by 1/4" to 1/2" or so.
And the same distance or more from other components, especially if they are other resistors.

I was thinking of 2" to 3' above the board. That would put them at least 1" above everything except one air coil.
By putting them 2" to 3" above the board they will be over the connections they will be soldered to.
Over the last 10 years none of the resistors in my outboard XOs have ever gotten hot to the touch.

I wasn;t concerned about them getting hot. I was just concerned about positioning them not secured to the board. Are they likely to get that hot? Mind they don't melt their own solder...
