Additionally lowers the total impedance, and the resistor can heat up as hell, more easily than a series resistor (usually).

What amp do you use, what is its output impedance?Does it also smooth out frequency response?
What general effect does placing a resistor across the neg and pos terminals of a driver have?

It will drop, but in the worst way. The lower the impedance (smaller value resistor) the lower the SPL will be.
