I recently blew my 18" sub and am looking to replace it. I was coming up with a rather waffly question and decided to cook it down a little instead.
I have an EPQ2000 amp(2 x 1000 - 4ohm or 1 x 2000 8ohm)
Should I replace the old sub with:
Option A - Fane Colossus 18XB 8 ohm(99db)
Option B - 2 x Fane Colossus 18XB 4 ohm(99db) (double the budget but double the fun?)
or Option C - Fane Colossus Prime 18XB 8 ohm(100db) (25% more than option A but i get an extra db)
Cheers

Welcome to the forum!
Perhaps details of the sub you blew would be helpful.
What do you hope to gain in comparison by using the driver choices indicated?

What driver and how did it fail? Thermal, mechanical, both?I recently blew my 18" sub
Option B will have the most output by quite a bit and should be relatively bulletproof.Should I replace the old sub with:
Option A - Fane Colossus 18XB 8 ohm(99db)
Option B - 2 x Fane Colossus 18XB 4 ohm(99db) (double the budget but double the fun?)
No you probably won't, power compression will soak that up and below 50hz output potential is determined by driver excusrion capability, the Prime has more of this but also has slightly lower efficiency so I predict a wash.or Option C - Fane Colossus Prime 18XB 8 ohm(100db) (25% more than option A but i get an extra db) Cheers

Thanks 🙂
It was a Fane studio colossus, 400w, about 20years old, I think these are the specs http://forum.speakerplans.com/uploads/2182/COL18B.PDF

It was both. I didn't notice the tear in the surround though until I removed it from the cabinet.

I like the sound of bulletproof, and lots of output 😀
Good to know that it isn't worth the extra coin in that case.No you probably won't, power compression will soak that up and below 50hz output potential is determined by driver excusrion capability, the Prime has more of this but also has slightly lower efficiency so I predict a wash.
